The period of time it will take you to go bankrupt will largely depend on how busy your local court is.

Bankruptcy will have absolutely no effect on your flatmates.

Welcome to the Forum Lisa,

Thomas Charles is right, the length your bankruptcy will take is can be dependant on how busy your local court is.

But Never fear I have seen posts from one forum member where they called up their local court to go bankrupt and got an appointment on that same day.

Hi lisa

The other forum experts are right. The best thing to do is ring up the bankruptcy clerk at your local County Court and ask them what is the earliest date you can file a debtor's petition for bankruptcy. You can either collect the application pack from the Court, which involves filling in a number of forms, or download the pack from the Insolvency Service's website.

To enable your application to be heard, you will also need the £490 Court fee, and will need to attend Court on the day of the hearing. Once a bankruptcy order has been made, the Official Reciever will be appointed to act as your Trustee immediately, and will want to interview either by phone or in person shortly afterwards.

Don't worry - it is all a fairly painless process these days.
