I need to declare myself bankrupt...I have been making reduced payments to credit cards for over 5 years and just can't continue. With hindsight I should have arranged an IVA. My problem is that I live in a very small comunity and would not like to be declared bankrupt locally as everyone would know about it. All my statements etc have always gone to a mailing address (as I did not wish my partner to find out about them).

Can I declare myself bankrupt in the area of my correspondance address? Also as I have not worked for many years (childcare) and live in a different taxation duristiction...will it cause problems with the official receivers enquiries? My national insurance or tax details (although I don't earn anyway) would not show in England. I just don't know what to do...I am frightened I am going to be forced to walk out on my family in order to go and declare myself bankrupt elsewhere...and if I did that I could never go back...please help.

When you say I should have arranged an IVA - what is stopping you from doing so now? You can only declare yourself bankrupt in the area that you reside in - but your mailing address will also be included in the advertisements. Where do you actually live?
