I thought that an IVA was confidential?

I have just found out that you can go on the insolvency website and get details of anyone who is in an IVA and their address and date of birth! I thought that an IVA was confidential? This really worries me because my work could find out and this would be frowned upon. Is there anyway an IVA could be excluded from this website? Someone could type in my name and see that I am insolvent! Thanks for your other replies to my queries too.

Short answer is no I'm afraid.

Unfortunately IVA companies commonly mislead people by saying their details will not be 'publicised' as happens in bankruptcy, by which they mean it will not be advertised in the paper.

This does not mean they will not be on the Insolvency website, which of course they are. However I would be surprised there was much anyone at your work could/would do about it - other than talk about it behind your back!

Also, unless you know where to look who's going to find out? It is private really, between you and your creditors. You don't have to tell your employer.

I do not personally agree with this register being available on the internet to all and sundry, however the DTI have made their decision and feel they are doing the right thing. However, given the days of widely accessible data, it is hardly suprising that this is now available on-line. I think that it would be very unlikely for your employers to want to carry out a search on you.

A (partially) comforting thought tho.

Casual googling using someones name is extremely unlikely to pick this information up.

The information is held in a database, so in order to find it you have to actually go to the website and do a search there.

Contrast this with the latest BRO/BRU, which are kept on a standard web page and CAN be found by simple googling.

I've just googled my name and all I managed to find out was that I have the same name as two actresses!

Onwards and upwards!!!
