we've changed our bank and did it before the first phone call re the iva though we did know thats what we were going to do. The only questions they asked that might have given them a hint was why did we wantto change banks (had beenwith HSBC 20 years) told them we had been unhappy for a while and it was lots of little things !!! and was asked had we ever been bankrupt...which of course is a no, cos we haven't.
We got an account each and a joint acc and savings plus daughter savings acc.
Fingers crossed for you hun x
I do have a santander current account I never used it
Maybe only HSBC and First Direct hunt the IVAs ??
I just assume they will tell me in a few weeks to get lost
Some people seem to suggest if you had an account with a bank before your IVA you have had no problem after using it.
Although as I said before I did have a santander credit card in the IVA although they don’t seem to know that yet
Yeah Creditors are a no-no really. As for closing accounts after they find out HSBC and First Direct are the only ones I know of who would do that.
Obviously accounts with Creditors might be closed.
Maybe just see what happens with the Santander one in the next few months?
I'm wondering if it might be worth writing to the Chief Exec's of all the UK Banks we know of asking their position on giving accounts to people in IVA's and BR and trying to get some definitive info for people looking for advice.
It just seems very hit and miss at the moment as to what branches are telling people and how people are being treated.
I'm happy to undertake this by email and letter if no email is available. I'm on a site tomorrow where all I can do is surf the internet anyway uo pass the 12 hours....

I think only HSBC and First Direct do this, the others seem ok. Obviously if they are a creditor they may well close the account.
Nice offer Luke but I doubt you would get a definitive answer.
You can but try!

That will never happen! Ed Milliband made me laugh in his speech when he said 'let's be honest' several times during his speech - honest and politicians do not go together!

Luke, great minds haha! I was thinking today that creditors get away with murder, flaunting the guidelines/ rules that frame the IVA process and financial services regulations.
I want to do something about this starting with the HSBC/ First Direct issue. I have just finished a job (in a bank) and have two weeks a/l before I start the next one so I can spend a lot of time on the interweb too.
I thought about starting a new thread and using it as a form of petition whereby people can tell their personal stories about accounts being closed by these two bad boys and sending it off to the CEOs, FSA, BBA, OFT and the consumer credit crowd (if these aren't one and the same as the OFT). I will start the thread with a list of ways closing accounts contravenes the various acts and codes the banks have signed up to and ask people to contribute their personal experiences with HSBC/ FD. And any contraventions I don't know about.
It's a drop of p*** in the ocean really. But I feel really strongly that we need some sort of consumer action. We aren't victims or criminals and as consumers of debt solutions we deserve to be consulted and have our opinions heard.
If anyone knows whether something like this is already happening, please let me know and I won't duplicate but do point me in their direction. Also, if any of the experts know this is doomed to failure please tell me not to waste my time. Or more hopefully, if you can add anything please do help me.
I just get so annoyed by the many stories of people being treated like dirt. I made a mistake, I am paying for it (literally LOL) and I cannot be expected to do penance for the next 5 years. Neither can anyone in this situation. There does need to be a balance and on the whole there is, but I can't help feeling that some in the financial services industry act out of spite.
PS. HSBC/FD didn't clos an account on me but their actions just epitomise the imbalance of power and injustice.
PPS. I think they close accounts because people in IVAs are of no commercial value. They can't lend to us and we can't save in any significant way. So in reality, our accounts are costing them money in running costs. But this goes for all the other banks too and they manage to operate ethically and still make money.
Give it a go, but personally speaking I think you are wasting your time. They're not going to change their criteria.
We tried to get the Insolvency Register taken out of the public view and did a petition via Downing Street.
Unfortunately it didn't work, despite a lot of signatures and is still available to Joe Public.

I wish you both well, but, ever the cynic, I doubt it will make any difference.
