A low cost IVA is one where the DI is quite low, everything else is the same.
I presume the creditors would expect you to rent privately through an agency rather than sit on a housing list for years.

If you are forced out of your home it may be that the local authourity has a statutory duty to re-house regardless of who has been on the waiting list for years.

If you voluntarily hand over the keys, then the housing authority won't look at you.
If you are made homeless, you will probably end up in a B&B somewhere, at least to start with.

Just looked in the local paper Jan - one and only one house to rent in a village some miles out - £800 per week - 3 year lease, (this will make you smile) no DSS(!!), no pets, no smokers, no young children, 3 months rent in advance, bankers reference required and insurance cover for any damage.
I suppose it could also depend on the area that you live. For us to rent an identical property would cost at last £100 more than we pay for the mortgage. Unfortunately round here £800 would get you a 2 bed maisonette rather than a house!
Here Paul there simply are no houses - the hotels refuse to take LA people, families are split in so called bandb miles from here. Jan, you are right there, that has happened here with a voluntary handover, the two people, man and wife slept in their car until they found a one room flat in a town some miles from here. Neighbours took them in during the day and helped with food , toilet etc.
Very pleased for you Janet, my wife and I hope all goes well for you for the future> Your post of 22p will assure Paul - I hope! That man deserves some help - he helped an old lady here!
It's seems it's just one more hurdle when you are trying to get your life back on track. Your choices are limited.
When we started investigating, we were told by several estate agents in our area that some landlords won't touch you but some will. In most cases, you either need a guarantor who has to supply payslips and bank statements and prove that they can pay if you default or you have to pay 6 months rent in advance.
Most do credit checks now so it's best to be honest and up front. We found one estate agent who had a client who was BR and they managed to find him a place.
One estate agent asked "What is an IVA?". We won't be going to them!
Best option it probably to rent privately if you can.

Sorry David, it's £800 per month - minimum! The don't even have 2 double bedrooms, just 1 double and a single so it's not really suitable for a family.
The vast majority of people, in all walks of life, don't know what an IVA is, so I wouldn't let that put you off.
Even some of the staff in the creditors call centres don't know what they are!

It's been lovley chatting to everyone but it's such a lovely day we're going for a walk on the beach. The best things in life are free!!!!!
Typical that the weather inproves when it's time to go back to work - it's been so lousy for the last couple of weeks while I've been on holiday (well not at work anyway - can't afford holidays!).
Chat to you all soon I hope.
Chin up everyone. Debt is not the end of the world and there are people in even worse situations than us.
