You've summed it up perfectly Sblack!

Please don't think I was singling anyone in particular for criticism as I'm not. I used to work in the court service and I can remember how bad the pay was. The majority of public sector workers do a great job, but the few jobsworths give them a bad name. I think (as usual) this all comes down to government mismanagement - the MPs make sure that they're ok, which makes the rest of us resentful as we struggle.

I won't be coming out on strike to support them - can't afford to lose the pay and don't suppose my IP would be very impressed!

I sympathise with you Jan, my daughter cannot afford to lose the 2days wages , but is under so much pressure not to cross the line, its actually making her ill.Striking doesn't resolve anything.

No, it just alienates people from one another. The only way round it is to take a days holiday when the strike is on. That way you are not crossing a picket line, but neither are you losing pay.

Hi Again

The idea of taking leave on a strike day is not novel hence the fact that here we we live you are not allowed to do this as a means of getting round the strike. I beleive it to be a rule that either the authority have or the union has.

Sorry

We have no problem with that where I work. In fact, the last strike we had a couple of years ago, an awful lot of people did so.

It must vary between authorities -my daughter isn't allowed to book a holiday or use flexi time.

Presumably if you've already got it booked, it isn't a problem?

Yes, if its pre -booked fine, but as soon the strike dates were banded about she was told no holidays or flexi time could be taken.

I do think you ought to be given the choice, that way you don't have to go into work and cross the picket line, but if you are strapped for cash, you don't have to lose a day or two's pay.

In our job in the private sector for just above min wage we work between 8:30am and 10:00pm 7 days a week inc bank hols and sundays. We do not get extra pay for evenings or saturdays. The only day we are closed is Xmas day. When I first started in the job we never worked past 6pm nor did we work sundays or xmas eve or good friday. Now, for no extra pay, we have to work all of these or leave. We do not have a union so cannot strike.
