its even worse for BR you get named & shamed in the local press!

Defo think that access to the register should be restricted though!
I'm not sure it is worse publicity wise going BR. Your details come off the register after 12 months in BR and for 60 months in a IVA - Now thats not right. Had I known that before I took my IVA I'd probably have gone BR route and bit the bullet.

Too late now.

Any publicity in this matter is bad publicity. Something really should be done about that register.

I agree with others that the majority of people probably dont know the register exists, I certainly did not until 3 weeks ago. I didnt even know about IVA's until 6 weeks ago.

I think that if you want to peek then they should charge a fee! They do that with most other registers, so why not this one?And as for putting BRs in the local rag? That is so old fashioned, the OR contacts all the relevent people anyway. I reckon that within 5 years, my above points will be the way things are done![:p]

Why do they publish them in the newspaper anyway?

i think the reason why it is put in the london gazette and also in local newspapers is so that any creditors that may not have been declared at the time of bankruptcy then get the oppurtunity to come forward.it is not done to name and shame the individual who has gone bankrupt.i think that is right anyway ? So is every br in the London Gazette, or just local ones?

I can understand the reasoning when it was originally done, but these days creditors tend to be big firms based all over the country, so unless they check every paper, they're not going to know.

It's as outdated as debtor's prisons - and they got rid of them years ago!

im sure i read somewhere that it goes in that london gazette as well as in local papers? im sure some 1 will correct me if im wrong.it is very old fashioned&in my opinion totally unnecesary.apart from wantin to try my best to pay some of my debt back the newspaper thing would be the main reason why i wouldnt go b.rupt.i would never be able to go out of the house ever again as i know that people can be very judgemental & narrow minded.i def think that more people would choose br tho if it wasnt publicised.

Every bankruptcy in England and Wales is advertised in the London Gazette, in Scotland it is the Edinburgh Gazette and in Northern Ireland the Belfast Gazette.
