Hi All,
I recently had my handbag stolen, it contained everything a girl carries in a handbag!!!- about £10 in cash and my late mums engagement ring that i had just got back from the jewellers, i was having the size altered.
The insurance company paid me the £10 and are trying to replace the ring "like for like".
They have come back to me today and said that they are having a problem sourcing a similar item and asked if i would prefer a cash settlement. i have said no as i wanted something that looked the same as the original ring - i've never seen another one like it.
If they come back to me and say they definately can't get one and pay me the value - do i have to pay this into my IVA or can i use it to go and find a replacement?

Hey vickir, I'm so sorry about the ring, that's awful. Something similar happened to my friend and she ended up with vouchers not money but I don't know if that's always the case. Surely you wouldn't be asked to pay this over if it was meant to replace what was stolen. X

It was an antique emerald and diamond ring in a rectangle setting (18ct) - the only place i'm going to find something the same is a pawnbrokers or antique fair / or even one of those police auctions

I am so sorry to hear your news vickir - your Mum's engagement ring would have been priceless and irreplaceable. Any IP who took that money from you as a windfall, would be completely heartless - and I do hope that you manage to find a replacement, or something suitable that your Mum would have been happy to own.

Such a sad story and a dreadful sign of the times in this country.
Regards, Melanie Giles, Insolvency Practitioner
