Hi
I was guilty of thinking that at the time John was being pedantic. However I think that we must take advice from someone who is obviously an expert in this area.

I'll probably stick with Churchill for my insurance - I recently made a fault claim and had no problems.

John, will I always need to declare this when I take out insurance? It seems very unfair to have to declare it post discharge, especially as for most things I only have to declare it if asked.

Hi Skippy,

It's up to you. Do you want to be sure that your premium - money you have worked hard for - secures you the cover you want ?

Please remember, the person to whom you make the disclosure will forget about it as soon as it is recorded, you'll never meet, and even if you did, you and they will never know.

Thanks for that John. I am a named driver on Dave's insurance - does he need to declare that I'm bankrupt? Sorry for the questions, I just want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong!

It really winds me up that if I had committed a criminal offence I wouldn't need to declare it after a certain length of time, yet because I've made a mistake with money it stays with me for life! I also think it's very unfair that insurance companies don't tell you what they consider a material fact - it seems to me that it's another way for insurance companies to get out of paying out.

Sorry, I'll get down off my soapbox now - rant over!

John, that rant is in no way directed at you - I just have a very low opinion of some insurance companies who shall remain nameless!

Hi Skippy

Can I join your rant ? ME TOO !

This ia about protecting YOU, and removing their protection of hiding behind "Material Fact" without being required to define it.

Let's play them at their own game, bnt let's win, eh ?

I find all of this a bit worrying, I took out my house insurance in 1999 with a company and was burgled in 2003 so I have had to stay with this company for 5 years because of certain clauses they imposed after the burglary but I have never disclosed that I entered an IVA in 2004, although they do credit check me everytime I renew as I've checked with Experian. I recently also took out car insurance with them too and they credit checked me for this also. Does anyone think I should declare my IVA to them now?

Hi, I see no reason why you should have to declare your IVA to them. If your payments with them are up-to-date they should not have a problem.

They are probably just credit checking you for identification purposes rather than credit reasons.

That is what I found with my insurances & my IVA was never disclosed to them as they never asked!
