I know that not everyone here can afford a holiday so please do not think that I am been insensitive. I just wanted to point out that if you are able to have a holiday it pays to look around. My wife and I have just booked a holiday for later in the year and by being very carefull have manaaged to save a large amount on the high street deals. Firstly do not take the first price you see. We were offered a holiday at such a price By a high street agent. So this is the price you need to beat. I then rang the same companys telesales line and they then found the same holiday with their sister company a lot cheaper. I said I would think about it. About 20 min before the sales place closed I called them again and said that if they wanted a deal before they closed then could they give me any more discount. Which they did. So by making a couple of phone calls have saved enough to take as spending money with us.
If you are no good trying to haggle on the phone and have access to the web. Watch the prices for a few days as they do vary every day and when you see a price you are happy with then book it.

I think some of us are coming out of financial problems and we do need to consider steps by not making the same mistakes again so I think any advice is always welcome.

We will try and resume our camping holidays which can be very good and not expensive!

Also very healthy!

Hmmm, not being a lover of the 'great' outdoors, I'll have to take your word for camping being healthy Ray! Please can someone explain to me what is good about having to put up your own accomodation, sleeping on the ground, having no electricity (how on earth would I do my hair!?![:0]) and having to walk across fields in the dark to the toilet block (presuming there is one!). I like my creature comforts too much for that!!![:D]

I have to agree with skippy, my idea of camping is in a hotel with an en-suite and electricity!!

I booked a cheapy break off the internet, advertised as a camping weekend.
Turned out it was a village people tribute band concert, hosted by graham norton and julian clary.

taught me a lesson.

Gotta support Ray here..... camping is great, cheap and needn't be uncomfortable if you have the right kit..... For the past couple of years it's all we've been able to afford but it's been great and the kids love it...... am worried now though about being careful booking....couldn't be doing with a week of Julian Clary!!!....

Cheers OT, as ever you bring a happy note into an otherwise cheerless day...

On the holiday front....are you aware that Flight Centre have a price beat policy? This applies primarily to Flights but they are also really competative on hotels, Eurostar etc...oh and if you are either under 25 (Youth) or under 35 and in full time education (Student) they have special student/youth airfares...one of only 2 companies in UK to offer this....so when back on track and thinking of a break....give them a visit!!!

Mum bought us tent last year and so we took our first camping holiday. We invested in sleeping bags for the kids and air beds to ensure that they were warm and comfortable. There were two bedrooms and the kids wouldn't sleep without us so the eldest slept with me for 2 nights and then on the last night she decided to sleep with her Dad.
That was as far as I am concerned the best decision she ever made. At about 2 in the morning I heard my husband gagging and saying over and over again I don't believe it. Then the smell hit me....... for some reason my daughter had had a large accident of the solid kind. I'm ashamed to say that I found it hillerious (once I knew that my little girl was ok). I sort of pretended I was asleep and left him to deal with it. The next morning I felt sooooo guilty (no honest) Despite his best efforts with a pack of baby wipes they were absolutely covered in it. The new sleeping bag went in the bin and the tent hasn't been out since.

I think we'll give it a miss this year!

I've always been fond of camping but it must be a sign of getting older, I now only camp if I have electric hook up. Everything but the kitchen sink goes, mini fridge, fan heater, table lamp, portable tele, kettle, toaster. Camping with just a tent, sleeping bag and a one ring stove went out the window years ago.
