Hi All

I am sitting here reading all your posts and finding myself agreeing with all that is said. I too see the march of time becoming a jog and now a sprint. I was wondering if any of you manage to get a holiday while on an IVA, I know it sound frivolous but we have not had a holiday for five yers already and if approved I was wondering if it will be another five before we escape for a break.

I am getting very apprehensive at the moment as our paperwork has just gone to the creditors appointment dept or what ever they call it, so we are in the holding bay and waiting. Another Q, roughly how long do we have to wait before we hear.

Well, gone on long enoough now so will end there.

Your IP should have your case ready within 4 to 6 weeks of receiving a full set of documents, and once signed he/she has to give at least17 days notice of the creditors meeting.

When I contacted my IP about holidays, they weren't happy as they said that any money that you can pay towards a holiday should be paid to the creditors. Now whilst she had a valid point, surely to God someones health is more important ?

If taking two weeks away somewhere is going to make you less stressed and therefore more positive, surely that has to be a good thing ?? I'm not talking luxury, 5 star all inclusive either.

I'd like to know what would happen if you managed to save the money by being frugal and not going out. Would they then say that if you can do that, then you can change your I&E permanently to increase your repayments ??

Catch-22
There's light at the end of the tunnel - it's just that sometimes the tunnel seems so long.

Hi J and D, when you recieve your proposal and look at your disposable income, you will realise that it would take a long time to save up for a fortnights holiday.

You would be better off looking at the offers made by the likes of The Sun, as mentioned in other links on the forum. It may not be the same as two weeks abroad but at least it will be a holiday.

If you get the opportunity to work overtime, this may be where you could put a little extra away to possibly have an holiday in a couple of years time. You would be paying half of the O/T into your IVA anyway and the rest is yours to do as you please.

Personally, we are more concerned with trying to build up some sort of contingency fund for when things (as they always do) break and need replacing. You may find yourself in this position once accepted when the realisation kicks in that their are no cards to fall back on any more.

I am sorry you haven't had a holiday for such a long time, but at the end of the day, we would rather forego the holidays for a few days away somewhere, knowing we are still in control of our finances.

Believe me, no one loved holidays more than we did and I hope this isn't sounding like a lecture, a holiday is the last thing you will be thinking about over the next few weeks.

Good luck for the future and I do hope you do get the opportunity to save for a deserved break [:)]

There are two sides to this argument - firstly the need to see creditors repaid as much as possible and secondly being that person who has to live through the five years doing so.

I am always delighted when clients tell me that they have managed to save for a modest family holiday - after all we all work hard and deserve a much needed rest. There are lots of cheap holidays around these days, and fairly wealthy friends of mine recently did the "Sun" deal by way of an experiment, and really had a ball. Camping is another solution which is great fun and does not cost an arm and a leg, but you can get to some really great places in the UK quite cheaply.

And of course there are always the house swaps as mentioned on a previous post! It's one way of getting away to somewhere different.

Camping trips are fun, healthy and inexpensive! We are off for three nights this Friday for a grand total of £45!
Again in July for four nights £60 and a week in October for £120 in a cottage - quite lucky because our friends that we have entrusted with our situation have been so kind and they have paid for the bulk of the October holiday!

How can we afford it ??? buy a money tin that you can only get into if you get a can opener to it! So far I have filled two up with loose change at the end of each day - I aim to put in a fiver a week - amazing how quickly it adds up!

Think outside the box - you can easily earn a few extra quid for selling a few things at a boot sale that have been hidden in a cupboard for years!

Hi All

Thanks for all the replies to my post on holidays, I was thinking of hols in the UK. We are not lovers of foreign holidays. I will look into the sun hols idea. I still do however think it is important for getting through the year to have a break from the routine. We have no kids so it would not be too expensive and we do not have the prob os screeching teenagers and bawling kids, thankfully.

Is it ok to go on holiday abroad if someone else pays for it?

i am not an expert but i dont see why not! and if you were to do overtime and somehow managed to save your surplus and paid for it yourselves, i dont think you would not be allowed to go abroad as long as you maintained your iva payments, i am not an expert and so i may be wrong, wait for an expert to answer

We will miss our holidays abroad, but the last two years running we shouldn't have gone, but did.All of it, inc. spends was on credit cards. It wasn't ok and I was stressed.I have described before, wandering throught the med sea on a very hot august day and having panic attacks thinking about the cost.We might be able to afford a caravan this August. Not sure yet.Mainly because I've got a 15 year old who hates the thought of being stuck with us for a week. The 10 year old will love it though. We also have booked a sun 3 day break for october 1/2 term. These breaks are certainly not as exotic as my other hols but they will be paid for and I won't have a panic attack whilst there- won't be in the sea either though[:I]
