I have a friend in the security industry. He is a manager for a large firm and is involved in vetting. I thought it would be prudent to post information about the position of debt.

In the vetting, if the applicant has debts of over £5000 then they will fail the vetting. Bankruptcy would also cause the vetting to fail.

The vetting is to the relevant British standard.

I had 'enhanced' vetting and I definately had debts more than £5000. I got through the vetting - albeit I had to have an interview with the vetting unit detailing my financial affairs.

I was also involved in developed vetting whilst in the Forces, and that is also not my experience, you do however need to demonstrate that if you have debts that you are dealing with them responsibly - and an IVA is an appropriate mechanism.
