Help! I'm going for an IVA and I've been turned down for a Basic Bank account by Abbey (no explanation).

There's a Nationwide Branch just up the road from my workplace so should I apply there now? I'm a bit worried if they see a declined application from somewhere else on credit records they will turn me down.

Thanks

Ian

You just have to keep trying, and make sure you don't go to a bank to whom you already owe money. Clients of mine have recently successfully opened accounts with NatWest and Alliance & Leicester, so that may be worth a try.

Avoid all of the HSBC banks, who seem to have a policy of closing accounts where they find out that customers are subject to IVA proceedings.

Hi Ian
As my bank is one of my creditors I have opened up a new account with the Co-operative bank. I arranged it all over the phone pointing out I didn't want an overdraft. They were very helpful so may be worth a try.

I had both a loan and an overdraft with Natwest. When I commenced my IVA they reduced my switch card (now maestro) to a solo card. since finishing they have upgraded me back to a Maestro card. Perserverence is the name of the game. Good Luck

I switched to HSBC before my IVA went through. Done on-line & over the phone.

Now with what I've heard above, applied to Nationwide.

Still in the process but again sorted online easy enough. Didnt want too much silly paper work either (only wanted 2 forms).

They did however turn me down some time back (18 months ish). The dopey local branch had me applying for a full current account. SOetimes actually seeing people is ermm a waste of time. Bless em.

I tried the co-op before but they rejected all my paper work, due mostly to postcodes being incorrect. (I had just moved at the time so didnt have much I could use). Plus they wanted 4 forms, and no branch near by to actually call at.

HSBC were quite helpful, on telephone (actually knew what BAsic Bank Account meant) and set up to call in local branch with paper work. Pity really.

[88]Hi Ian,
As a rule of thumb they should not be looking at your Credit ref file if you are not applying for credit.[:)]

But sometime ago even the Nationwide seemingly changed there Basic and seem to say basic current account according to my local branch- I wonder if there is a catch with all this jargon so that they can now delve where they shouldn't by a change of wording.Perhaps some staff are just not getting it!!

Thanks to everyone for the posts.

I opened a basic account with Nationwide with no problems. I did this face to face and it took 10 minutes.

At least thats one worry off my mind!

Sounds good news on here! Yorkshire Bank is also part of the Clydesdale.Maybe it's down to local attitudes and different people and the luck of the draw!
