Thats nuts.....To be honest i dont think any of my kids would apreciate anything as extravagant as that and certainly not at that age.

High school proms are different (although my son didnt go to his he thought it was daft) My daughter is looking forward to hers but then i suppose thats girls....pretty dresses and lots of fuss.

unfortunately this story is rather typical. The reason he can exist like this is because we live in a culture where material wealth and the cult of celebrity rule supreme. Unfortunately our banks and financial institutions now have the extraordinary ability and will to maintain this way of life.

As a consequence the lower working classes are now just simply aspiring neuve rich.

I despise the role models in this country today. Our modern culture will leave nothing of note to future generations, just the same recycled s*!t.

People are becoming increasingly lazy as parents and too obsessed with the notion that spending will somehow improve their lives. This slow demise in our culture is very real, and is a complex problem which starts with the individual.

Ho hum of my soap box now.

Some girls in my work always use the saying "it's friday lets so sepend on teh card" I don't follow and certainly won't be ever again. It's sad that they don't know what I know. Proud to be me!!
When will this all end?

It worries me at work how some of the young women spend on credit and don't seem to realise that its got to be paid back. 2 are in IVA's and they are both in their 20's. As you say Loubylou it's a shame the others that spend spend don't know what we do, they all think it's ok because their card limit keeps being raised!! but sadly there may come a time when they can't pay, I just hope I am wrong.

Who knows what we know unless they've been where we've been?? I agree it is a shame but people only learn by experience and making mistakes, and if in this credit crunch, card companies are still bumping up limits, they are adding to the growing problem....

I think there is too much snobbery now, I went to buy some plants for my garden and I always go into the bargain basement, OK so they wont look good this year but next year they will, I can wait at 99p compared to 4.59. When I got to the till, the girl said, oh all bargain at 99p, I said yes thats me. Even at the vets when I had my cat castrated on Tuesday, I took him in (his boy means the world to me), they said oh he is a black moggy, and passed to the next woman who had two pedigree white and lilac colour points or something, (certainly didnt resemble lilac to me, deffo grey). Then she started up this long conversation with her and my moggy was just handed over and I was ordered to sign the paper. Ring us around 2 O'clock and we will let you know when you can take it home. Mrs two long haired show cats got, we will ring when lionie and lennie are ready Mrs. we will lick your ass as well as clean your cats teeth. I got a look as if to say, now go and search the sofa for the fee you moggy ridden pauper you.

This gives me the horrors!! To hear of this, and I do with some of my friends, that they are skint and just enough to pay the mortgage/rent this month but oh what the hell there's always the reliable credit cards to fall back on! I used be like that, and it was fun but not for long. if only they knew it's down the slippery slope of debt hell! I think it's worse for people with children; it's not helping them in the long run. I dont have any so I have only myself to worry about in this mess! I avoid days out of shopping and lunches out with my friends these days but I would hate to think that they could end up like me. None of them know my situation but my excuse is that I am trying to save for a house etc. and have to seriously cut back on spending.

The question is why do we need to show off what we can afford to buy to find acceptablity in society? Also why do we have to keep IVAs secret from close people or friends? I am beginning to think the only real friends I can relate to are others in the same situation; I dont know any that's why I find this forum helpful.

i also agree that there's too much snobbery nowaday's.when i was younger i wouldnt have gone anywhere near shop's such as poundstore's and other bargain shop's,hence the reason why im having to take out an iva ! these days i wont shop anywhere else other than home bargain, primark and the poundshop.and if something is cheaper in tesco than asda i wont compromise i'll make the extra trip if it mean's i can save a bit of money.(its a good job that all these different shops are near to where i live ! )

I think because we, as a nation and culture, have lost track of family and personal values and what is really important. We are wrapped up in this material comfort zone that we call life and to pay for this lifestyle we need credit. Look at the role models that are out there with all their wealth....the ones who buy £millions worth rings, houses, cars, yachts AND babies. The message is loud and clear, money brings you happiness! The question is, are they really happy? I know I was more stressed than happy in credit BUT spending did make me feel better for a while. It was definately a form of self-medication for me and I suspect I'm not the only one.....
