The problem is Johnt, how many people can actually afford to go and buy a new car, even if it is for £6k or less. I know I couldn't and as much as I don't like my car I know I'm stuck with it regardless of what the government take in taxes. I'm lucky as it is cheap to run as it's only a 1.2 Corsa, but I'm beginning to feel the pinch with petrol. In an ideal world I'd get rid of my car as well, but although I only work 4 miles from home, it's not a safe bike ride and the bus would take me over an hour to do a journey that takes me 15 minutes in the car!
I really don't think that the new 'green taxes' are anything to do with being green. This country is in horrendous debt thanks to a certain chancellor selling our gold reserves among other things, and so they have to recoup the taxes from somewhere, with the motorist being an easy place to start, followed by the householder who doesn't put the lid down on their wheely bin!
I do agree that we have to conserve energy, and I am happy to do my bit by recycling.
I'm sorry if I sound bitter but maybe that's because I am. I have a good job, and therefore I'm taxed left right and centre, but what do I get back for it? Nothing apart from my bins emptied once a fortnight. Crime is on the increase, hospitals are filthy, kids are leaving school unable to read or write so where is all the money going?
