Labyrinthitis

Has anyone else had this? I've been feeling dizzy for the past week or so and went to the doctors last night and was told that I had labyrinthitis. I'm really struggling at work as looking up to the screen from whatever I'm reading makes me dizzy! The doctor told me that it will last for 6-8 weeks, but does anyone know anything I can do to help with the dizziness in the meantime?

Hi skippy. When I was 19 I lost the hearing in my left ear and suffered with vertigo really badly. I couldn't hardly move without feeling sick and dizzy. My doctor prescribed the travel sickness tablets Stugeron. I don't know if this will help at all.

I know - I had to look it up on the internet to find out what it meant! The silly thing is I'm ok apart from this stupid dizziness!

Hi Skippy,

How odd I have been off since Tuesday with this. I went to the doctors Wednesday, she said that I had fluid in my ear canal and that's what was causing the dizziness and sickness. She called it a very long word (as they do) and prescibed some tablets to be taken. She told me to take time off and lie down still, that didn't work so well for me though[:(]

I must admit I do feel slightly better than what I did although it does seem to come and go.

Well not only do we share the IVA forum but we now all have the same illness's[:)] Is it catching via the computer[:D]?

I do hope you get to feel a little brighter soon[:)]

I wasn't given anything for it (a good job as I haven't been paid so couldn't afford it!) but was just told to take it easy. I'm mainly getting the dizziness when I look up or down. The doctor told me that they have seen loads of people with this recently, but they don't know how it's spreading as the doctors haven't caught it and people living in the same house don't seem to be catching it - very strange! Perhaps it is spread by the computer...

Hi Skippy I had this a few years ago, I found the symptoms very scary, I cannot remember how long it took to clear up but like you, I was just told to wait and it would. I used to swing everywhere on a chair at work (being lazy) but the whole world whizzed around and it stopped me doing that at least!

That is really strange Skippy - because I have been feeling really dizzy lately (some of my staff say I always am!!), and had just put it down to tiredness.

I have particularly noticed it when I am driving - get feelings of real lightheadedness and when staring at computer screen! It's either that or I am due for a holiday!

I had 3 episodes of labyrinthitis around 10 years ago.
The episodes were about a year apart and lasted only minutes, but the experience affected me for much longer than this.
The first episode saw me waking up in bed in the morning with the room spinning above me & a feeling of nausea.
This kept me off work for a week. I was prescribed Stematol, a travel sickness tablet. This did seem to help.
Months later the second episode had me keeled over on the kitchen floor after bending down & losing my balance due to spinning sensation.
No drink was involved in either incident!!

When this feeling came over me it helped to sit upright & look at a vertical plane eg telegraph pole.

I attended a brain scan (mri) after the 3rd episode and this showed up nothing untoward.

Touch wood, nothing like it since.

Repeat episodes apparantly reduce in intensity, so fingers crossed & hang in there.

My doctor said there's a lot of this around at the moment Melanie. I'm ok driving, but looking at a computer is hard. I'm not too bad moving my head from side to side, but up and down is horrible!

Isn't it strange how so many have your symptoms.. weird!! wonder if it is to do with looking at VDU!! I work on one all day and then on here on a night!! I will watch for symptoms and report back!!
