Hi John,
I'm a novice at this, but more experienced people will be along soon to answer your question. The letters are the start of your journey, I my experience if you call them they will offer you a repayment plan to settle the debt with them - they will not take into account anyone elses debt.(I am not an expert by any means, just another person in debt!!) Be patient and get expert advice - I'm sure you will get it on this site.
You are now on a life journey with all of those on this site -everyone here helps and supports each other, they are super. It's a bumpy road, but you will not be alone and others can tell you what's comming and how to deal with it calmly and reduce stress levels that come with money worries.
Welcome to the Family as I call it..
Best wishes,
Chardonnay

Hi John, I sent my letters to the creditors as well as my authority to act letter a week ago. Only had letters saying that we are overdue and a lot of phonecalls! Not had those ones yet, but if you are with an IP then I would avoid calling them and let your IP deal with them.

I never spoke to any of my creditors. Just wrote to them telling them of the situation. Once you are in your IVA, these will stop

I wouldn't ring them, let the ip dealing with your case do that. they'll probably be trying to get some money from you before the IVA starts.

They just want you to make a payment over the phone, they try anything. If its MBMA they like to try to deals outside of an IVA. As Chris says. Let your IP deal with it...

Don't make any payments, pass it all to your ip and don't call them

I am just starting on the IVA route and have sent all my stuff to Melanie's team, done an I & E and sent letters informing of this to all creditors. The ones that were ringing are still ringing as yet but they are "trying to be helpful" now and want me to talk to their IVA depts - don't think they have that anyway just a ploy, whilst being nice they still ask for a payment over the phone. I politely reply - sorry can't do that as it wouldn't be fair and you will be hearing from my IP. NOt had too much hassle.

They tried all sorts to get me to make 'token payments' too. Just have to stick to your guns or do what I did and stop answering the phone when they don't give up calling.

I doubt it, they believe they have the right to call morning noon and night. As soon as you inform them that your arranging a IVA they run scared and put your numbers into a autodialler to call to get as much out of you pre iva as possible.

John, its a personal decision whether you decide to speak with creditors or let your IP deal with it but be aware that Goldfish were relentless in calling me for a realtively small amount of debt I had with them. They start around 7.30am 7 days a week and go on until about 9pm. You may not have the same experience (I hope you don't[:)]) but they called me multiple times a day.
Good luck as it is a very stressful time
