Unless you are desperate for a credit card, I wouldn't advise getting one.

I agree that direct debits are the norm these days but I much prefer standing orders as I control the amount that is paid rather than the other way around as I am never sure how much my bills are with direct debits and never seem to forecast how much I got left properly. With the child maintenance I pay for example part of it I pay for mobile phones for and deduct the amount from what I pay over. With the clearcash budgeting tool I can put the money into a seperate budget, pay the mobile bills and know exactly whats left to pay over. It will also give me the ability to show how my budgets approved in the IVA are fairing when it comes to annual review. I am not knocking any system at all and I know that both skippy and Jan are happy with the way they have organised thier bank accounts but unfortunately for me I need a better analytical tool to see whats happening with my finances now and this is probably because in the past I bought whatever I wanted on the credit card if there was not enough in the bank and so budgeting was never really done. I must admit I think Wonder has her finger on the pulse a lot better than I ever have.

What is the matter with a straight forward analysis book? I know exactly what is in which account and which budget heading simply by looking at the relevant page. J

I don't do pen & paper any more. I know a lot of people are happy with the basic bank account but when I saw what the icount can do I was amazed. I must admit I pestered them with loads of questions first before signing up and it really does tick all the boxes for me. I popped into town today to get some things for our 40th birthdays and forgot to check me balance before I went which was a pain then trying discover how much I got to spend. When my icount is up and running I would have found this out via text message instantly and saved all my panicking as I didn't have much time as I had to fetch little one from nursery.

Each to his/her own I suppose. If I were not satisfied with what we have we would go to the Secure Trust - it is a proper c/ac such as we now have. I like the idea that Secure Trust is part of one of the oldest and secure Private Banks in the UK.J
