During the emigration over here we ended up leaving a balance on a
couple of credit cards.
Over time this balance got out of hand and we couldn't pay. Now I have saved up some money and would like to try and settle with the
credit card companies to clear this. It has been nearly three years
so how would I go about it. I currently live in the USA so any help
would be much appreciated

I think a good place to start would be to order your UK credit file report (this can be done by going through either Experian or Equifax both have websites). Once you have found out who you owe the money to (as your debt may have been sold on) you can go about contacting them and making an arrangement to pay them back.

Oliver thanks for the advise, the money I have saved is probably the same as the original amount owed and not of that plua all the interest, do you know if they normally settle for lesser amounts?
