This is part of the point of having a forum, to share experiences and offer advice however, what works well for one, may not suit another.

But these are all issues that are out of your IP's hands, so to criticise the advice given at the time you entered into your IVA is unfair.
Hi Melanie, the advice we were given day one was by an agent of CCCS who came to our home, we still have our notes from the meeting and the paperwork he left us.
Our opinions are not unfairly based they are based on what we were told by this agent.
It is only after being on here we realise that there are more IP's than you realise and that we could have spoken to others to find one which suited us best, as it was we were told in no uncertain terms that as I had my own business there was only 1 IP we could use..
That is absolutely outrageous nickjohn! I would invite the PR representative from StepChange Charity (CCCS) to comment on this and explain why you were advised in this manner. Had you not been given such advice, would you have looked around and sought a number of opinions, or at the time were you happy to go with the firm who had visited you?
I think that CCCS referred him to GT as being the only firm who do self-employed cases. Flipping insulting to be frank (and that's the polite version!)
To be honest, I'm criticising myself & "the did I do the right thing" in my post above. I think entering a IVA was one of the most scariest, yet most grown up thing I'd done in my life back then! Knowing i had no family with funds to bail me out & they wouldn't of understood why, I felt totally alone & worried.
For a whileI did cling onto the hope of a mortgage one day, after the IVA & credit file got cleared up....... now I know I need a lottery win!
It is frustrating that the banks keep on moving the goal posts & I certainly do not hold anyone responsible other than the banks themselves. I think we have been punished enough & would certainly make the perfect clients for years to come, we just wouldn't go over drawn etc.
Final IVA payment made in April 2013, never ever thought we could do it or get through it but we did! X

When we took the plunge and accepted we could not cope we looked around and contacted CCCS as they came with lots of recommendations and did not want money up front. As soon as we told our creditors about CCCS they all backed off so this again gave us confidence.
At our meeting we went through all the finances etc etc and I made it clear I owned my own construction business, at this point we were told that to make the IVA succeed we must make be able to make a monthly payment of at least 1% of the overall debt, which we could do, and that there was only 1 company who dealt with businesses.
We were asked if it was ok for them to pass our info over to this company, which given the circumstances we agreed to.
At no time were we made aware there were more IP's who could take us on.
Had we known then what we know now we would have jumped all over this site and contacted 3 companies....

Hi Melanie, I am not self employed, I own my own Ltd company and am paid PAYE as an employee / director..
Edited:
Just re read your post and understand what you mean, that all IP's can do self employed not just GT..

I must apologise for all my rants, things are tight enough at the moment at work and it looks like we have just lost a contract so getting a bit stressed. Roll on the week end and a bottle, or two of wine.....
Rant away nickjohn - I would rather you vented your anger out on your fellow forum posters than your nearest and dearest! And you do make a very valuable contribution to the forum.
