Personally I'd rather go into a shop than apply online as humans have more discretion than a computer!
When Dave got his mobile contract years ago he wasn't on the electoral register and had a poor credit rating. Carphone Warehouse gave him a contract but he had a call limit, and they also took a deposit, which he got back after running his account properly for 6 months.
A few years ago I saw an advert for a mobile phone shop that offered a free mountain bike if you signed up for an 18 month contract with 3Mobile. I thought this seemed a good deal and went into the shop and applied. I failed the credit check but was advised that O2 would accept me. I was with my girlfriend and really embarassed so signed for the O2 contract and slunk out of the shop.
Only later did I think I might have been conned. I often wonder did anyone ever get the free mountain bike?
Probably not, but then again O2 are better than 3 so you probably had a lucky escape!
My friend is with 3, and on a few occasions her husband's phone would ring, it would be her number on the caller display but it would be a man phoning. The first time it happened he was worried that something had happened to her, but it turned out that there was a problem with the network.
I haven't decided yet whether to upgrade with Vodafone or try my luck at getting a contract with another company. If Vodafone won't give me what I want I might drag Dave around the phone shops to act as my guarantor!
If I change it'll be to O2 or Orange. I was with T-Mobile a while back and they were rubbish. Their website said we had coverage where I was living at the time, they just didn't mention I wouldn't be able to use the phone indoors!
I love O2. Been with them for about 5 years now. Even if I could change, I wouldn't.

I'm happy with Vodafone apart from their appalling customer service. I'm sure they now have overseas call centres, and the level of service has dropped.
Thank you everyone for all of your advice. I happened to mention my dillema to my sister today and she offered to take out a contract for me :d. I was always very wary of discussing my financial issues with her but she has been my rock since I told her about our IVA about two years ago.

She's great. Like most, we have had our arguments but even then, still help each other. LadyH, that sounds like a good plan with getting my own contract after this one.
That's great GSF. One step towards getting your own contract.
