Can you get a new mobile phone contract whilst on an IVA?

Chris.

Update - I tried for a new contract with Vodafone direct but was declined. I am about six months into my IVA. I'll have to look into upgrades with my current network or consider PAYG.

Hi chris
I think generally, as you say, you will have to stick with your company and upgrade or go pay as you go, hubby has just upgraded and managed to save a bit, ask for a better or more appropriate plan.

Hi Chris,

I believe you will be credit checked if you change mobile phone providers, so it may be best to upgrade with your current provider.

If you do want to change networks I would go in to a independent mobile phone shop explain that your credit rating is not good and see what they advise. I know that O2 from CPW is quite credit friendly. I think that T-Mobile may be as well.
If you do want to upgrade on your current network tell them that you want to leave (if its a contract) and you should get a better deal then just upgrading your phone.

I dont have an IVA (other half did) but just wanted to say that I have just got a new contract phone from O2. Because my credit rating is extremely poor, I was asked to pay a security bond of £100 for the phone. Once I have had 3 monthly statements from O2 and kept within the payment agreement etc and had no problems etc, I get this bond back.

Obviously I cant say whether having an IVA would have affected it any differently (OH and I are financially linked though) but just thought you might like to know.

Forgot to mention both O2 and T-Mobile do sim only packages. There is no contract as they dont give you a phone and you can cancel at any time. The downside is that you must have a phone to put the sim card in. However the credit check is far more relaxed as there is no phone and once you have proved you are a good payer for a few months you can try and upgrade to a contract with a phone.
