I am in an IVA and my bank has given notice to close my account. I did manage to get myself overdrawn (£148), had 2 calls from the bank which I discussed and talked through, on both occasions happy that my salary would more than cover this. The bank had meantime sent a letter of cancellation of my account, cancellting all my DD etc.

Can I still get a basic bank account with another bank?

Hi Mark

Yes you can get a bank account with another bank - try RBS Key Account. Whilst in an IVA, you cannot get any credit therefore a Basic account is appropriate. There are some banks who will offer you a Debit Card with no credit facilities. Sometimes these are better as it gives you the opportunity to purchase goods on-line etc. Try the banks that you don't owe money to as you have a better chance of acceptance and its also better for you to go into the bank in person and talk everything through with them. If you apply on-line whilst in an IVA, chances are the "computer" will refuse you an account.

Hi marka and welcome to the forum

Who do you bank with? If HSBC or First Direct they have a policy of not banking anyone who is subject to ongoing IVA proceedings.

Also if you have gone overdrawn whilst in an IVA, then that is deemed to be taking unauthorised credit - another reason why your bank may have taken the stance it has.

You should have little problem in obtaining banking facilities elsewhere - this forum has many postings on this very subject.

Hello Mark

I opened a basic account with Lloyds tsb, cashcard but I found that you can only withdraw from lloyds machines and no debit card. I walked into co-op on Friday and was totally honest with them, I opened a cashminder account with debit card and internet banking. They were really nice to me and did not judge at all.
Avoid HSBC or First Direct as they have been known to close accounts of people in IVA's, even if they are not one of your creidtors.
Good luck

Hi Mark.a
It may pay you to look at "think" banking. Its a managed account for £12.50 a month and you get a maestro debit card.More importantly you cannot go overdrawn with it so you will never pay more than the £12.50 a month.I bet its cost you a fair amount to be just £148 overdrawn.
The account is open to everyone and its all done by phone,08456343499.They are backed by the Royal Bank of Scotland, but it does not matter if you have had a debt with them.

Hi, I was in a position at the end of last year where I was given notice that First Direct was going to close my account within 30 days. As already explained by Melanie, it's now in their 'small print' that they don't serve anyone in an IVA.
I rang CoOperative bank and was offered a CashMinder account within a couple of days (due to routine fraud checks). I've got a great account now which I can access online, the staff are friendly and very helpful and I've got an Electron debit card which is my preferred way of buying so I haven't actually got cash burning a hole in my purse! So far, I haven't come across anywhere where I cannot use Electron so it really is just as easy as using a Switch / Maestro card. All my direct debits and standing orders can be paid out of the account and I've honestly had no problems at all. Touch Wood!!
Hope this helps.

I agree, the staff were very friendly, I went in and asked face to face, I was served Immediatley and treated with the utmost respect. I needed a drivers licence and a council tax bill.

I have the Think Banking account that Andy mentioned - so far it seems ok, although if you can get an account at one of the high street bank accounts I would say go for it as, providing you manage your account properly you won't have any charges.

With the high street banks it is always best to make a face to face appointment at your local branch and be upfront and honest about your IVA/Bankruptcy/Credit History and the fact that you will require a basic account with no credit products.

hello, mark.a if you are inclined towards being a little overdrawn try Thinkbanking. It will not allow you to go overdrawn. They issue a maestro card too. I have it and so far so good.

I am hopefully about to start an IVA - we have a joint account with the abbey - not a creditor. We have a visa debit card but the account is not overdrawn. Will there be any problems? - can I assume this bank will be OK and not close the account on me? and will I keep my debit card?

So long as you do not have any other debts with Abbey this should be fine.

I closed my hsbc account and withdrew all my funds very early on into applying for an iva, I switched to a natwest step account, which is as mentioned a basic account, I have no overdraft, no switch card or cheque book, this is a much better option for me as I have no access to credit, which is brilliant.
