Hi Andy

Yes they are although the link is not that strong!

As for bank accounts I use Co Op cash minder which has an electron card and have managed to open an account with Halifax Easy cash again with a Visa electron card. They have internet links Take the point that it does take 7 days for cheques to clear.

I also managed to open a basic Nationwide account as well but just got a cash card for that one.

As for a credit card I went to cash plus master card which does have an initial fee of £10 and a monthly charge of £ 4.99. This is very good and means that you have to front load funds before you can use it!

I hope this helps!

Good Luck

You need a SOLO card....a UK debitcard....the Visa E' card is not accepted by Virgin trains,BA, and GNER.

GO NATWEST.....

For prepaid/credit card - MINISTRY of SOUND or BREAD card - maestro - cheapest to use....I compared them all

Hi

I have just taken advice on the forum regarding opening up a bank account - I am petitioning for BR (hearing in 2 weeks) and have just this minute completed opening an account with Think Banking. (Thanks Andy Davie) They have at £25 one off fee for setting everything up and £12.50 monthly admin charge. You are issued with a Maestro card and there are no further charges unless the ATM you use charges for the convenience, or you withdraw money or pay by card whilst abroad. Having a prepaid credit card is not something I would like to have - you are charged everytime you wish to withdraw cash or pay for purchases.

I went for the Co-op Cashminder account and the pre-paid Virgin card, which works out cheaper than the £12.50 per month for the Think Banking account. I hardly use the pre-paid card and I've had no problems so far with the Visa Electron.

The reason why i suggest prepaid Mastercards is that there are expenses like rail fares and some places which do not accept Visa electron or cash!

Personally £5 per month is small compared to what i paid in charges and interest on loans and credit cards!

I guess everyone has different needs!

Andymac just in case you were interested the thinkbanking account is part of rbos but does not matter if they are a creditor they were one of mine but I was told by them it doesnt matter as the account is for those with iva's etc.

I would have got a pre paid if the account had not come with one, they are a great idea.

I think the Cashplus card is better because although you are charged a monthly fee of £5 purchase transactions are free. It is a Mastercard which is accepted almost anywhere.

The Virgin card is £9.95 and then 2.95% per transaction so it works out cheaper if you use it as little as I do. I was a bit upset that Richard Branson has sold the Virgin Megastores though - I don't suppose I'll be able to get a discount in there when they have been rebranded!
