Hi, not sure if this has been mentioned in any of the other posts. I got a Nat West account before my IVA (standard thing no overdraft or credit card) and when my IVA started the debit card stopped working in the petrol pumps at the local supermarket.
After much chasing and replacing of cards it turns out there are 2 levels of debit cards with Nat West accounts and if you in an IVA you get a basic one which works in cash machines (though I have been told they do not work in all cash machines) and shops / supermarkets etc but not in petrol pumps..
nickjohn is 100% correct, there are two types of debit card and they do exactly as he says, your account may be labelled as Select but you can hold the debit card that does not work at petrol stations. I know I'm one of them.
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.
Nick, the details have long since slipped into the darker recesses of my mind, where no-one dares to tread, however, where the card works will depend upon the first 4 digits of the number.
The standard Visa has numbers which are pre-approved (up to a certain amount) with electronic points of sale, so don't need to be validated prior to purchase. These are the ones that work in petrol pumps, which are not linked to the cash card network and can't check.
The Electron / Delta cards need to be approved each time they are used and can only be used in terminals which are linked ( or ca phone into) the cash card system.
Some numbers have over time been updated at the banks end from non-approved to pre-approved -- but they will get rejected if the retailer hasn't updated THEIR end !!!
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.
IVA Completed 23rd July 2013 .... C.C. 10th January 2014
I went in to question this Foggy after I tried to use Asda self-serve and it wouldn't work, they told me I had the wrong type of card and although I had the Select Account I needed a different card and they would order me one. Needless to say it didn't arrive just a letter explaining that I did not fit the criteria for this card.

You're right Foggy, that happened when the Co-op upgraded their debit cards from Electron to Visa. They should have changed the first four numbers to a Visa Debit series and as they didn't it's down to individual retailers to update their systems.

Hi Foggy, The card I have is a VISA Debit so don't have the problems with Electron / Delta.
I understand what your saying about the pre approval as I think most petrol pumps have a pre approved limit of £100, but (going off what my wife has told me in the past as she works in retail) I thought all debit cards had a pre approved limit of something like £50 anyway, this is to speed up the process for shoppers only making small purchases.
I have used this loophole with my Nat West card on occasions when I have been due money into my bank but needed fuel or food before it went in..
One of the other things Nat West do which bugs me is if you have a DD or SO going out of you account they allocate the funds in your account against the payment before the payment is due. I had an instances when I had a payment going out and 2 days before they allocated the funds in my account against it. When I asked the bank about this they said it was normal practice for people with bad credit and it was to help me and stop me going over drawn (I have no overdraft facility).
From previous experience with banks they allocate the funds when the payment is due to go out..
I have a basic Nationwide account with a debit card and I have no limit as to what I can spend on it. Prepaid fuel is £99 but that's the same with the Barclays account as well.
I only have a basic account with Natwest, as I shop at Tesco's and I can use those cash machines I do not have any problem with the restrictions they place on the basic account.
I do not want to get a paid for account until I have no choice, while banks still have free accounts I will use them, it helps us living in a city, I can understand the restrictions could be difficult for people living in the countryside where access to certain ATM's is limited.
If life is what you make it, I must have been in a strange mood when I made mine
Thanks for all the replies, it appears that I have opened up a can of worms!,
It appears this 'basic' card does everything the same as the Select Ccount! Just not wide access tomcashpoints, however, to be honest I tend to use a cash back facility and this appears to be fine.
I am just annoyed they didn't have the balls to call me/write to me and explain the options. I don't really want to change banks as their banking app is fantastic and I like it when they preallocate funds for DDs as know where you are with everything.
