I'm woth Nationwide and you have to have money in the account the day before a direct debit or standing order are due. If the money goes in the same day you are overdrawn.
I thought with Lloyds you could pay in until 3pm on the same day the DDs were due. They might have changed it, but if not they should have told you.
I was annoyed with Nationwide a couple of months ago - they bounced a DD because I would have been less than £1 overdrawn and then charged me £15 for the privilege!
They're a law unto themselves. In the bad old days HSBC were charging me over £100pm in charges and interest on a £1500 overdraft and refused me a £1500 loan over 3 years on grounds of affordability!!!! Funnier, they said it would be irresponsible lending as i would get into financial difficulty even tho the monthly repayment would have been lower than the charges and helped me pay it off! They could have had it all plus interest and now they're getting pennies in the £ - way to be helpful!
I went in to my local branch and asked to be upgraded to a basic current account (no frills) and obviously mentioned I had been a customer for a long while which meant nothing as the advisor simply told me due to my situation etc I would be declined.
Ok left it and thought I would apply via my online banking account and voila have been upgraded to the select current account.
They are simply ridiculous really are and goes to show how different there systems are!!!
The thing that annoys me.... if as mentioned in this thread... they are trying to phase out free bank accounts, we will be forced to pay for a service which we have no choice but to use. I can't see my employer reverting to pay me in cash every month, so I will have to have a bank account. Then be expected to pay for the privilege of accessing my own money. I already refuse to use any cash machine that charges for a withdrawal... bloomin' cheek... it's MY money. This really does wind me up. Hope this doesn't happen, but I can really see it coming.
And another that has just been upgraded to the select account, refused the overdraft and accepted online! That's me sorted now I'll go do daughter as she's not happy finding a Natwest for cash withdrawals.
Very easy and worth trying online if anyone wants to. x

I want to change to a current account once i receive my certificate of completion of iva.Unfortunately, i have been told that it will be unlikely as need to be credit checked.looks like have to stay with STEP(BASIC)account for a while yet.
With reference to Kay Kay.i completed my iva in september and still waiting for certificate.i was told 4-6 weeks but checking on ppi's which i dont have.solicitors holding it up.until this sorted the creditors dont get paid so the money still with iva firm.its driving me crazy.

Try the Co-op - you might be able to get an account with them.

I was with the Basic account (step) of the Natwest, due to the changes in the usgae of cash machines I was unhappy and reading this thread I applied for the select account online as an existing customer and all went through perfect, accepted straightaway, just try it, they can only say 'no' but like they're saying yes to some of us. I obviously refused the overdraft but got a cheque book x
