I am about to declare myself bankrupt. My chief concern is setting up a new bank account. Will I be asked whether I am bankrupt and is that likely to affect the decision adversely? In the circumstances would it be better to withhold that information?

Hi johnc and welcome. Personally I think it better to be upfront as its not worth any problems later as some banks such as hsbc are actually closing the accounts of those in iva's or bankrupt, best to start knowing it is ok. There are various accounts, it needs to be a basic account with no credit. The one which I have and recommend is thinkbanking they accept all and the managed account is a great support. There is a charge of 12.50 a month but that is it, they will accept all there is a maestro card also with the account, it also doesnt matter with this one who your creditoprs are as the account is designed for this reason, it is rbos. Another account is the coop cashminder. Hope that helps a bit. Also make sure the account is not in any connected to any of your creditors.

I declared myself BR at the end of September. If you can, get one a basic account opened before BR. I used the Natwest, but there ate others at Halifax and others.

Basic Bank accounts are designed for people just liek bankrupts, people in IVA's etc, so dont worry.

GOOD LUCK!

The only banks who currently offer bank accounts to undischarged bankrupts are Barclays, the Co-op (I can highly recommend them) and Think Banking (I remembered Andy!). Other banks may allow you to keep an existing bank account with them, but each case is different.

BTW once you are bankrupt (and once you are discharged) you have to declare this if you are asked. The bank may credit check you and find out that you are / have been bankrupt. I would say don't even think of withholding the information - it's not worth the hassle and could land you in trouble.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present - a gift to make the most of.
