I was looking on the Northern Rock website this morning and I noticed that it said that their current account is available to anyone over the age of 14 who lives in the UK. I didn't read the Ts and Cs properly, but I couldn't see anything mentioned about insolvency.
I don't know if they would allow someone who is BR or in an IVA to have an account, but it might be worth a try for someone who can't get an account elsewhere.

There are also many pre-paid debit cards and at least one with a billing facility which might be useful. Email me and I will forward you the details.

It is definately worth a try Skippy, and well worth posting about. So far as I am aware, NR do not have an anti-insolvency policy with regard to current accounts.
NR are interested in depositors and also ways in which to make money - I don't think they offer any free service, although I might be wrong. A pre-paid debit card with bill payment facilities could be an option.

I much prefer a proper bank account for my everyday bills. Just use a prepaid card for spending (when I have any spare!) Might check out the NR account myself.

But the pre-paid card with billing features is exactly the same AND no bounced cheques or any penalty payments!

I agree Jan, I prefer having a proper bank account.
Surely the idea of an IVA is to learn to budget and manage money so you don't get bank charges? I know I'm much more careful than I used to be and account for my money down to the last penny on my spreadsheet.
A pre paid debit card just doesn't do it for me - I'll stick with a proper bank account!

I would like to make an offer to Kallis3 and Skippy 13 at no cost - why don't you both email me and I'll suggest something to you both?

I agree with you both Jan and Skippy, definitely prefer a proper bank account to a pre-paid card. I've got the paypal one so that I can transfer any cash from my ebay sales, but I haven't been on ebay for ages now so a bit of a waste.
I will make the same offer to you Viki.W if you email me please.
