I have approached Norton Finance and they are saying I qualify for an IVA to resolve the £17k of debt. Are they any good - they have my debit card details to ensure my payments to start with but am in the "cooling off period" - is this right or should i look elsewhere?
I wasn't aware that Norton Finance did IVA's? I thought they were just a loan company?
I would make sure they cannot take any payments out of your account as at best they will transfer you to an IP at a cost (that is if they do this sort of thing)
Visit www.iva.com for a list of companies and reviews and give one or two a ring for some free advice.
I've just googled them and they are known as Norton one stop. The info on the site is very sketchy and they pass on their details to Price Sterling (also part of the Norton Group) who I've never heard of and you will pay an upfront fee for them to 'introduce' you to their IP company.
Please check out a couple more companies before making a decision.
One of the most helpful Insolvancy Practioners that post on here is Melanie Giles. My IVA was not with her but have seen nothing but good feed back for her and her staff.
But as many will suggest there are a number of companies that you can check out on iva.co.uk
You should speak to 2-3 of them and pick the one you feel comfortable with. Also read the forums and see which companies have praise and those who have horror stories.
7 years after starting an IVA I finally received a completion certificate from ClearDebt
You can either look at the experts that post on here via the 'Ask thw experts a question' link on the left hand side of the page or visit www.iva.com for a list of companies and give one or two a ring for some free advice.
Personally speaking, I wouldn't touch Norton though.
Hi magicmanpaul, I would also give the same advice to look around as the others have posted. Also before any money is deducted from your account via your debit card I would ring your bank and ask them how best to stop the company from taking any money as you ave willingly given over your card details. I think you need to speak to norton at the first instance to request they do not take anything , also put it in writing to them, if no joy this way the only other option is to cancel your card with the bank.
Hi magicmanpaul, i too would speak to both Norton and your bank, i echo what has already been said re shopping for a firm to represent you as 5/6 years is a long time and you need to maintain a good relationship with your IVA company, you would do well to look at Melanie's firm, i certainly would've chosen it had i not already been in my IVA a year before having stumbled across this forum. Good luck and hope you get sorted soon. x
Om shanti, namesté, good luck to all who are embarking on the IVA journey, it isn't always an easy one but the outcome is the best.
IVA COMPLETED August 2012, received Completion certificate 18.4.13.
What i would have done (if i was at the start) is go here http://www.iva.com/iva_companies/ and see who comes top of the ratings!! I would then contact the top few and get advice from all.....but start at the top [;)]
It may also be worth noting that in the review some of the 'larger' companies dont do too well'!!!
Also read through a few posts on this forum that mentions companies, im sure you'll ger a feel for who is having the most issues with whom!

I quite agree with you Niobe, i up to now really haven't had a problem with my IVA firm and it does seem a shame that right at the end problems have arisen, hey ho who said life was easy!
