Would it be the same for a PCSO Skip?

No, I could still apply to be a PCSO. However you still can't go on to be a police officer without doing the course - experience obviously counts for nothing!

If you're a PSCO and you want to do the course you have to fund it yourself, and the force may pay for it afterwards, although it's not guaranteed.

I think it's a strange policy as they are going to lose some good potential police officers who can't afford to do the course. It wouldn't be so bad if you applied and were offered a provisional place providing you passed, but you can't apply without it.

Nope, you still need the qualifications! You can work be a special, but they won't employ you without it! I wouldn't mind but we're hardly inundated with police officers on the streets here!

I've just realised my last post makes no sense whatsoever!

What I meant to say is that they will take you on as a special, but if you want to be a paid police officer then you have to do the college course.

I think that is terrible!

You could try the Specials to see if you like it to start off with.

Doesn't make sense to me! You clearly have a desire and would be an asset..yet could be ruled out due to BR...blooming madness in my opinion!!

I wonder if you sent a personal letter to your chief of police and MP if they would accept you????

Are they specials or PCSO? We never see Specials round here, but the PCSO's are around all the time.

They are probably the Police Community Support Officers who are employed by the Police.

Specials are purely volunteers and do the job usually at weekends. They have the same powers as a police officer whilst on duty, whereas PCSO's have the same powers as a normal citizen.

I could never understand why we, in the Territorial Army, got full rates of pay for our duties - when I left I was being paid £120 per day - whereas the police specials get nothing, only out of pocket expenses.

They are putting their lives just as much at risk as we were, so why don't they get paid for it?

totally agree melanie, anyone who make our neighbourhoods safer and provide a caring attitude should get paid.i feel more secure when i see specials or other wardens.they visit people aswell where i live to introduce themselves thats good for lonely people.

If you pay Specials then they would be normal police officers I suppose. They do a good job but of course they have a day job as well. In my force they have to do at least 16 hours a month.

The support officers are proper paid employees.

We had day jobs when serving in the TA as well, but still got paid very fair rates of pay for giving up our weekends and holidays.
