Old creditcard statements & Bank statements

I am having a bit of a clear out, feel the need to de-junk !!.
What do I do with all my old bank statements and creditcard statements ?? can I burn them or would you keep them for a while ?

I threw out everything apart from the most recent ones. Always a good idea to keep some record just in case.

i am glad you asked that question i wanted to burn some of mine, but i thought we had to keep them.

I asked my IP the same question, and she said that I should be OK to throw them all, but if I wanted to, I could send her the last 6 or 12 months for her file in case they were ever required.

I have to say we had a bit of a ritual burning, I had tonnes. On reflection though it would be sensible I think to save a few at least of the latest ones.

I must admit, I also had 4 files full. I had religiously kept them all, but I have since moved into a smaller flat, and space was at a premium, so they have gone as well. I borrowed the shredder from work!!!

I have 4 files full too I religiously checked them each month and kept at least 3 years worth for each statement

I had mine going back to when I was 18, so that's nearly 12 years of statements!! That's a lot when you get at least 7 lots each month!

If you have been self employed, I would suggest that you retain 10 years worth of records and to be on the safe side, ask your accountant, who will be better advised, to give you the number of years records you are required to keep.

For employed people, I think the answer is to keep what you may need ... P.60's is something that springs to mind. If you are in an IVA you need to keep your payslips for the duration, I would say. Likewise your bank account statements.

I am sure that any other things you may need to keep will appear in future posts. These are things that sprung immediately to mind.

Self employed people need to keep the previous 6 years accounting records to satisfy HM Revenue and Customs.

Not sure about the rules....didn't want to have all the old statements hanging aroound, but also wasn't sure about getting rid altogether....so kept everything from 6 months pre-IVA forward in current filing cabinet and everything before that, boxed up tight and away in the loft....

Once our IVA got the ok, we burnt all pre IVA statements, threatening letters and associated literature.
The resulting backdraft took the paint off every front door within 10 miles.
