We will be doing the North West in January - probably around the Warrington area for convenient access from the motorways. I'm going to ask Mrs Skint to try and find us somewhere as that is her neck of the woods.

Great news...

Just spoke to Co-Op on the phone and they opened a Cashminder account for me in MINUTES!

Great friendly customer service and no hassled or opinionated staff!

I'm going to have to wait about 10 days before I get everything set up to go, but I can deal with that. At last a positive start to a day!

I can't fault them - although I don't have a local branch I don't feel I need one as the customer service on the phone has always been excellent. If only they'd let me open a savings account!

Question:

Do you think it is worth opening a 2nd basic account? I have a meeting with Yorkshire Bank on Monday morning. Just thinking, I can then have a salary / bill account and then transfer any disposable income to my 2nd account for everyday spending. Just like I would if I was with Think Banking etc

Also would opening an account now stand me in better chance to be excepted as a current account holder when I am out of my IVA. As the bank would have had experience of me as a customer?

Hi
It would be useful to open a second account and yes it will give you a head start once out of the IVA to get an account upgrade

I've got my main account with the Co-op, and I've also got a Nationwide basic Flexaccount. My salary is paid into the Co-op and I transfer our housekeeping to the Nationwide.

Thanks for your postive comments guys. It really does help when you've got people picking you up and reasuring you.

I will keep my appointment with Yorkshire Bank as I've got nothing to lose and with Andy's comment above sounds like great advice too.

Cheers

Skippy, I am surprised to hear you say that you can't open a savings account with the Co-op. Why would any bank not allow you to open a savings account as there is no possibility of being over-drawn? Is this the case with other basic accounts? (we have opened a a flexi account with Nationwide)

The Co-op won't let me open a savings account with them as, wait for it, I failed the credit check! I've opened a regular saver account and an e savings account linked to my Nationwide Flexaccount, so it's not a problem now, but just a pain!

Thanks for your reply, Skippy
It seems extraordinary to me that the Co-op feel the need to do a credit check on opening a savings account. A bit like being refused spectacles because you failed the eye test!!

Anyway glad to hear that you were able to open one with Nationwide. I'm not anticipating having savings that will set the banking world alight but it is nice to know that any meagre savings can be put in a savings account and earn a bit of interest.

This is now getting bad again!!!!

Co-Op have just now told me they are rejecting my account after initially telling me I had been accepted and my account was going to be set up!

I have been to Yorkshire Bank this morning and they have accepted me for their basic account. They were really nice and have given me my account number and sort code. Confirming my docs and debit card will be posted to me.

Is their any chance this could get taken off me too????? Surely all the checks have been done? Apart from think banking this is my last life line!!!!

It sounds as though it will all be ok, if they have given you an account number and you did it in branch. They would have done all the checks there.

Did Co-op give you any reason why it has been rejected? It's really bad of them to do this when they told you that you were ok.

Hopefully you will get your documents through soon.
