Yes. To use a branch you have to withdraw a minimum of £100.

Ridiculous state of affairs. I think I would be going into the branch and withdrawing everything that is not needed for direct debits and placing it elsewhere each month.

What you seem to be forgetting Andrew is it's not that easy to change banks when you are insolvent. They know that the majority of people with basic accounts will struggle to go elsewhere.

That's very true Skippy. Most of us are limited as to the accounts we can have and with which banks.

The only other option is a paid for account which I won't touch unless I absolutely have to.

My thoughts exactly Foggy!

On the other hand, the others don't have a lot to offer do they?

This is ridiculous, as a customer what happens if the RBS cashpoint isn't working? No access to your money!

That is something you would have to take up with RBS.

I bank with RBS albeit via the services of Thinkbanking, and have never had a problem with them. In fact, they have in my opinion been great compared to some of those other banks who would not even consider me for a basic bank account, such as Co-op and Yorkshire BS. I do have to pay for banking but at the end of the day if you get a service you should be expected to pay for it (in other words, it looks like free banking days may be coming to an end unfortunately).

Thinkbanking will different to a basic account.

I would not recommend paying for a bank account if you can get a basic one for free. I'm surprised Co-op wouldn't consider you unless they are one of your creditors or you were not on the voters list at the time.

A free account, whilst you can get one, has to be recommended all the time.

I am equally surprised at YBS turning you down. When I opened my account with them, as with Co-Op, they merely did an electronic identity check ( no credit check at all) and confirmed acceptance there and then, on the phone in the case of Co-Op and online for YBS.

Are you on the Electoral Register?

As it happens being the OP I am also with thinkbanking and even when my IVA ends in a few months (hopefully) I have actually decided I will not be changing banks when it completes or make any attempt in the future due the what I get and the way their accounts work, yes for a fee but it just works perfectly for me. Nothing the high street banks offer interests me in any way in relation to a current account.

I ran out of space (or it seemed that way) on the heading of the post but based on the article this did seem to apply to RBS, Natwest. The problem here is that this is a slippery slope as I am sure many posters remember the attempt a few years ago when banks tried to charge for all ATMs.

Since the thinkbanking account is not a basic account I am hoping this will not be affected but I will be contacting then to clarify their position.
