Renting and in an IVA

Hi, I am wondering if anyone can offer me some advice. My IVA was recently accepted in Novemeber 2011, I but am currently living at home with my parents but at 31 I cant stay here for a great deal longer.

My boyfriend has suggested that we start thinking about moving in together. He is fully aware of my IVA situation and has a perfectly good credit rating himself.

My question is would we be able to rent? If we went to a letting agent would they accept us as he has a really good rating? Or would they look at me with an IVA and say no?

Has anyone been in this situation and can offer some advice?

Hi and welcome.

I would recommend that he rents somewhere in his own name if he can? Might make it easier.

You could always make an anonymous call to a few agents if you find somewhere that you both like.

Don't have any joint debts though - your boyfriends rating would be stuffed if you did.

I feel abit stupid because I really don't understand how renting works with regards to whose name its in. If my boyfriend rents somewhere in his name, what would we say to the letting agent about me? Would it be a case of I am going to live their but as far as they are concerned have no responsibility/accountabilty in paying the rent?

You're not stupid at all - I really don't understand too much about renting but think it might be better in his own name. It would depend upon what the letting agent said about anyone moving in.

Perhaps a few anonymous calls if you find somewhere?

I just made an anony call to an estate agent who kindly assured me that I will fail the credit check with an iva but If I can find an guarentor who earns 28K then they will accept that?

so looks like Im not moving and will now have to commute 130 miles each day to new job unless I can find an estage agent with a heart!!!

never mind. that was only the first one I called, surely there are normal people out there that appreciate we are in a darn recession atm and Im not some waster that will potentially wreck their home. Just gonna keep smiling every time "computer says no!"

Try private landlords, they are usually more sympathetic.
