I'm a member of Unison, and we came very close to striking a few years ago over a pay offer. At the time I was worried about what would happen because I could not afford to lose the money by walking out and I doubt very much my IP would agree to me reducing the monthly payment because I walked out on strike!!

Fortunatly, it did not come to that though. But I sometimes wonder if I would have crossed that picket line, I hear some really horrible stories about people who do, and they end up feeling isolated when they are back in work and made to feel like dirt and are pushed into leaving the company.

Not nice.

There's been two strikes where I work and there was never any trouble at all with people who crossed the picket line.

I suppose it does all depend on where you work and what your colleagues are like.

I remember a question being asked at the union meeting about members crossing the picket line if we were to vote in favour of going on strike. Some very nasty remarks were made at the time.

I'm sure they were. I'm afraid my family circumstances come before any strike action - and that would be the same regardless of whether I was in an IVA or not.

I'm afraid I've never joined a union. Even when my scabby Irish bank was up for sale and we were all dreading redundancy at any minute. I just don't like pack mentality or believe that as an individual I am more important than the success of the organisations that employ me. Besides, unions are so unbusiness-like and seem to have no idea of the impact their demands have on employers. That said, I wouldn't criticise anyone for joining a union as its a tough old world and we all have to do what we can to survive.

I joined mine because they were the best of a bad bunch at the time and the benefits I can get from there are quite good. If I'm off sick for any length of time then I can claim weekly payments from them.

We haven't got a union at our place, never had the opportunity to join one in any job I have done. Just lucky I guess [:D]

We don't have to join one, and T&G is not supported by my force but I still keep paying - it's a lot cheaper than Unison as well!
