My SC was rejected when my IVA was on file, not a problem because I was only doing an internal transfer and still had a job. It depends upon the level of SC they apply. For a security guard it won't be too intense unless it is for MOD or AWE

So DV may cause issues then?

DV is a fine tooth comb through your entire life! To be fair though I have no experience of DV clearance with an insolvency on file. I'm guessing that it could be problematic but of course I could be wrong.

The only downside is that I don't think you are allowed to confirm your DV status to anyone who is not DV Cleared so we may never know Matrix.

I would think the chances are slim, I failed at a much lower grade with the IVA which I declared.

I get so cross when people are treated as "outcasts", possible "threats" to the business.....just because we have seeked help to resolve our debts does not make us any less trustworthy or criminals.......or incapable of doing a job that requires security clearance..... rant over...sorry !
Sharing from experiences of dealing with debt

Hi, I have just had my DV interview and the interviewer didn't think it would be a problem, i got my certificate earlier this year, she did say if this was a few years earlier then they would have to do further financial checks during the time of holding the clearance, they are looking to see how honest you are and if anything could be used against you. SC should not be a problem as long as you are honest about your situation.

Hi eveyone, just an update to let you know that I have had my Defence SC Clearance sucessfully approved for another 10 years! Such a relief I felt like bursting into tears. Although they have approved me they said that will send me another financial questionnaire to fill in in 18 months. The good thing is no one got to know about my IVA, this is what I was panicking on, what to saty if they only approved say 5 years, people would have asked questions. The only thing that naffs me off slighlty is that the letter is written implying I am still in debt although I made it clear to them that my IVA was finished and that i was no longer in debt and that the defaults and IVA will fall off my file in the next few weeks. Even sent them my completion cert. This is the contents of the letter which is probsbly a letter template:

'Further to the Financial Questionnaire you recently completed, I would like to inform you that your application for Security Clearance has been approved.

However, I must inform you that there are concerns regarding your present financial situation and we will therefore undertake a review of your finances in 18 months time. This will involve the completion of an updated Financial Questionnaire and further credit reference checks.

Should the results prove adverse, it may be necessary to carry out a full review of your finances. This will require you to be interviewed by one of our Field Investigating Officers in order to clarify your position.

As you now hold a security clearance, I cannot stress the importance of financial propriety and would urge you to make every effort to reduce the burden of your debt in order to minimise your vulnerability to external pressure.'

When I first read it I wanted to phone up and say 'I AM NO LONGER IN DEBT' but at the end of the day I am just so relieved that i got approved. Just makes me smile how people don't seem to understand the IVA process. Maybe it was just a template and they overlooked amending the wording..anyway to everyone out there fretting on clearance be upfront and send them all the info re your IVA on the application and you should be fine :)

Brilliant news. I remember the stress of getting my DV updated when I was serving in the Army - and although I had really nothing to hide (apart from drinking more than I probably declared!) by the end of them I always felt guilty - they almost feel you have something to be guilty of!

Thankfully the next time you have to have one, the IVA will be a dim and distant memory.

Cheers Mel.......getting my SC clearance approved has been like a black cloud following me around for months. My SC expired earlier on in the year and i sat and waited it out until someone noticed, dreading reapplying, and they did in Aug. I was so nervous filling out the form I felt sick...it is an e-form now but you can email them separately if you want to send anything...then it was the long wait. I found the letter a little patronising, even if you are in an IVA you are actively doing something to reduce your debt, felt like a telling off letter but like you said it will be a dim and distant memory in 18 months.

I applied for a SC for an immigration job a month ago. In the extra space I stated I was in an IVA when it started and when it is due to be completed. They sent an extra financial questionnaire, which I completed and printed off my IVA plan and sent it off to them. I was security cleared a week ago. When they sent me the decision they also said that they will review my financial status in 2015, when my IVA is due to expire. Just be honest from the start and don't hide anything. You are dealing with your debt which is a good sign. I have posted the same question on this forum and got a really good response.
Patience is a virtue.
