We had to wear grey skirts and a white blouse and the jumper and tie had to come from the school. I think that was reasonable as the jumper had the school logo and the tie was in school colours.
For us it was green and white checked gingham dresses and bobby sox! Ugh!
It did get better later on when they let us wear normal green skirts and white aertex shirts in the summer. I have never ever owned anything bottle green since I left!
When I got to the 4th and 5th year we had blue and white checked nylon shirts, no tie and in the sixth form we could wear our own clothes but jeans and trousers were not allowed.
I remember having to make my own cookery apron and hat in needlework (I hated that!) blue and white gingham with smocking on the top part of the apron and my initials on the silly little hat!!

Oh I forgot to say earlier, that the uniform we buy now will have to be changed after two years anyway whether it still fits or not. Years 7 & 8 have red ties and red lined blazer and Year 9 and above blue ties and blue lined blazer. The girls skirts can't be more than 5 cms above the knee - I agree the skirt should be a sensible lenght but they have teachers on the gate in a morning measuring the length of skirts and anybody defying this gets detention!!
The boys school have brought in bottle green coats for the winter - can't get them anywhere - went in and they've now backed down and will let them have plain black. It's all getting slightly out of hand now!!
At my school we had a school striped tie and blazer with a logo on but you could buy the logo and stitch it on a blazer you brought so that opened the market up a bit. Happy days!!
Mel you might like to hear some poor kids in our town still have to wear straw boaters - and their parents pay a fortunte for them to go to that school and have that priviledge!!

Ridiculous. I genuinely hate this sort of prejudice, and seem to remember the measuring rod for skirt lengths we we used to defy by folding over the waistband several times. I can also remember us wearing our ties with ridiculously sized knots as well just to annoy the uniform police.
Boys in bottle green! Absolute yuk!

Isn't it ridiculous? Very draconian when they resort to those measures and I cannot see why schools have to change uniforms other than to get more money for themselves!!
I remember folding over my skirts at the waistband as well Mel!!

My colours were navy blue with touches of orange and grey (nice!!) in winter and dusky blue and white in the summer. We only had one stlye of skirt avaiable in mid-calf or knee length - so attractive!!
And for such an 'elegant' daughter my mum paid nearly £2000 and this was over 20 years ago! I remember mum laughing that my blazer was the most expensive item of clothing she'd ever bought!!
my school uniform was black and white, quite nice really, only i can never fetch myself to wear a black skirt now it feels like uniform!
i do remember my parents really pushing the boat out and getting me a leather satchel just like the other kids had, and i know it was very expensive even then, but i loved it, but by the end of my school years it was covered in felt tip with the names of my favourite bands etc.

My satchel was the same, only it was covered in the names of the boys I fancied at school!!

I feel lucky to have got away with a spend of £170 this year. My son is 13 and 6ft 3in so he is in mens shoes and trousers and has been for years. His size 11 feet are getting harder to shoe but I know there are specialist shoe shops out there. I have only bought the bare minimum as we will be relocating soon and don't want to waste too much on school uniform as we will shell out again.
My school uniform had to be custom made as I was a tall girl and the school suppliers didn't consider that they needed to make blazers big enough. Our uniform was a blazer of Royal Blue with grey stripes - just think deckchair! Straw boaters in summer and blue sandals - nice!
It's been a long road getting from there to here but it's been worth it!

I hate hats! Never wear them - not even to family weddings!!
I tell a lie - I wear a sun hat if I go on holiday and that's it!
You could stick my beret - it was awful!
