Hello Melanie Thanks for the in-depth reply. I think he would certainly be better going for bankruptcy as he has no assets. Personally (and don't shout at me please anyone) I think the restrictions it would place on him would really help him long-term. He just cannot get his head around using credit...

Sorry - I wasn't suggesting he SHOULD increase his debt, I simply put forward the notion that he would be better off if he had £10k more debt.
I was expressing my shock at the way the system appears to work.

Mick Things like the barbers, clothing, sundries, medicines are automatically allocated by the CCCS on-line software - it was only after looking at it we accepted that if they gave the figures perhaps they are "agreed" across the board as fair to everyone. I honestly don't know - and yes, he could p...

Hi Jue I probably shouldn't take this any further as I run the risk of not getting any help for the original situation, but... What I was trying to convey is that (according to the replies so far) he would be more likely to qualify for an IVA if he was £26k in debt as opposed to just £16k - and he w...

Thanks for the advice, so far !! I must admit to finding it rather strange. It would seem that he can have a debt of £16k and pay £180 per month for 7yrs 6 months. OR He can get himself into (let's say) a further £10k of debt and end up paying the same £180 per month for just 5 years ? It's not exac...

Jue & Zoe The CCCS "advice" was auto-generated after completing their on-line form. Unfortunately, because that form printed the "results" and stated in black and white "your monthly payment will be £183" my step-father already believes he has been accepted - he hasn't done anything with the actual ...

Jue - thanks
Zoe - the "report" he had back from CCCS suggested a Debt Management Plan, which would mean the debt was spread over nearly 8 years (rather than 5 with IVA?) and there was (I believe?) no guarantee the creditors wouldn't later sue etc anyway.

Hi My step-father has got himself into a huge debt and has now realised he needs help. He is 68 years old. He has just started divorce proceedings against his wife - they haven't lived together for 25 years - and will get nothing out of the house (maybe £1000). He has 4 credit cards and a bank overd...

Hi Melanie I wasn't complaining at not getting an answer from you (I can fully understand the volume of emails you get) - I was simply pointing out to some that I had actually tried. I will try and gather all the details together and post in the forum later - as you say, some stuff could be relevant...

Andy The new heading for the post has absolutely NO BEARING to the topic discussed. Please explain otherwise how you feel it has. Andy/Dave Regarding my step-fathers situation :- 1) I completed the "ask a question" form (before I started this thread) and it didn't make it to the site. 2) At the sam...

ADMIN You have "tucked-away" a potentially embarrassing headline which affects some people on IVAs. What is wrong with discussing the rights and wrongs of what should or shouldn't be an allowable expense under an IVA ? But NO - that would look bad for the forum if some people were seen to enjoy such...

You manage to sum it up better than I could even try - it seems anything I say is interpreted as anti-IVA and that is certainly not the case.
If that was my attitude, do people think i would bother coming on here to try and assist my step father ?

hallelujah - someone's finally got it !!!! Having an IVA is nothing to be ashamed of - but so many people just cannot accept the severity of the cutbacks they SHOULD be making before using this last resort option. Hopefully people can emerge at the end of it and start to rebuild their lives - well d...

Scaredkez Thanks for a well balanced reply. My only issue would be your statement concerning bias of people outside the site when the views within the IVA website are very worryingly biased too. I would just like to add that if people are faced with a mountain of debt, surely they have a responsibil...

Monday's Expert, My stepfather will, when his divorce is finalised, have around £2000 as his equity share from the house. Subtract the legal fees and he will be down to around £1,000. And your point was ?? It is regrettable that you couldn't attend your brothers wedding in Australia. You are going...
