I'm with the Co-op and I have found them very good - I've got a Visa Electron card (no problems with that being accepted so far!) but I've also got a Virgin pre-paid card just in case.

Go with the Nationwide...flex account..you get 4% interest that no other basic account can give....but open at branch only!

I got refused for the Co-op cash minder basic account which I am trying to work out why and I am going to cite the British Banking code

I read on another site that Nationwide are now refusing to open accounts for undischarged bankrupts (something to do with their merger with Portman), so I don't know how that will impact on people with IVAs as banks don't seem to be able to differentiate between the 2.

Did you ask the Co-op why you were refused an account? Were any of your creditors linked to the Co-op - Smile for example?

I had my NW flex for 15 yrs, I virtually resuurected it as it was dormant....I rang Co-op and they said the computer says nothing other than outright refusal, I have just written to them. I need two A/C just on the safe side.

I have just opened a flex account with Nationwide after my Bankruptcy order on 14th August. Skippy do you know when this info was announced, are they given notice to close or just not opening any further accounts???

I read it on another forum and apparently someone had read somewhere that N/Wide are stopping giving accounts to bankrupts because they have had to open so many that they don't have the staff to cope with it, and they are fed up with the other banks not doing their bit.

Thye didn't mention any plans to close accounts that are already open so fingers crossed it'll be ok. I might give them a ring in the week and ask.

I do think it's about times that the government made it illegal for banks to refuse anyone a basic account (unless they are a creditor of course!). I can understand that it won't be an all singing all dancing account, but surely everyone should be entitled to a basic bank account?
