I was just having a browse on the insolvency register, and I am now on the register (that's scary!) - but I found out that one of my best friends (IVA), as well as a family member (bankrupt) are on there.

It's a small world!!!!! [8][8]

That's one reason why it shouldn't be available to the public. I'd hate anyone to look me up on there, If I want to tell someone it's my choice. I have to confess I did have a nosy when mine went through though! I've never bothered looking since.

That's exactly why pixie, I totally agree with you. That sort of information shouldn't be so readily available to the public. Obviously, people who NEED the information should be able to have access to it, but any Tom, Dick or Harry shouldn't be able to see it.

If it's any comfort, there are many people who share your view - including most of the Insolvency Profession.

Clearly certain people have a legitimate reason to use it (the credit reference agencies being a good example) and given that I have a legal obligation to register every IVA to which I am appointed (and can face sanctions if I fail to comply) I would defend my right to use it too. Maybe full access for certain authorised industries but restricted access for others? The difficult thing is where to draw the line. Certainly there is evidence that appearing on the register means you are destined to receive an element of junk mail as a result.

I assume you've both signed the petition?

I have to admit to looking for people local to me once I knew it was there, not saying it's right but have to admit I did it, found a friend and her husband too, although I must admit they hide their IVA well especially considering where they're going on holiday this year! I have signed the petition as I think it's wrong too that all and sundry can find out your business, plus there is too much identifying information on there too.
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.

I signed up when it was first raised!
I wasn't even aware it existed until I found this site the day my IVA was approved. I was advised about the publicity regarding BR but not that my details would be available for the world to see in an IVA! In BR it'll be there a year but in IVA 5 yrs, most unfair.
At the very least you should be informed when making a decision between BR and IVA.

I'm surprised the Government have not thought about charging for access to the Register ... or maybe they have - provide more revenue for them to spend irresponsibly [:D]

Personally, I can think of no reason why addresses of debtors / bankrupts should be made freely available to the public.

I agree there are certain bodies that should be given free access to search individuals. But the irresponsible groups extracting information en masse such as IVA Council who have used it for their scaremongering should not be allowed full access unless they can provide justification for requiring that information. From what I have seen of their correspondence, they would find it difficult to provide a legitimate reason. They make allegations without factual evidence to substantiate their claims. Therefore they should not be allowed access to addresses.
Tell it like it is.
