Starting a Hobby!

Having been in my IVA now for nearly six months, I need a hobby to keep me occupied as I spend far more time at home. I have looked at lots of things but they all cost money....however then I thought about being an Avon rep or Virgin Vie consultant - but the cost of registering and initial outlay was too great. I have come across a greetings card company that use representatives to sell their products...I have invested £45 - this has given me everything I need to get going........I have registered as Self employed as per the guidance / requirements, but do not intend to make megga bugs from this - no more than £20 per month I would have throught - I am doing it more for the social element of it and being able to go out and about speaking to people and having a coffee.

Should I tell my IP? What impact will this have on my monthly payment - if I earn £20 in a month will I need to give all or 50% to the IVA - if i have to pay it all in, then ok...as this is more of a hobby rather than a business with additional income.

I would be inclined to tell your IP as any monies being received by you will show up on bank statements at review times, so therefore best to be upfront and open now.

Inform your IP but make sure that you also keep tabs on any increased expenditure as a direct result of this new hobby/job.Also I would expect you to be able to recoup the £45 outlay before any earnings are brought into your IVA.

I must admit, I have been thinking along the same lines - probably something like making beaded jewellery or something. On those long dark cold winter nights, it might be something to keep me sane!! [:)]

If an IP took 50% of £20 from earnings received from a much loved hobby, I would personally be very suprised, but it is right for you to declare this.

I personally would wish you good luck with your project, and perhaps IPs and creditors ought to bear in mind that with extremely tight budgets, Sky TV being reduced or disallowed, and no spare cash for socialising or going to the gym, that you are bound to have extra time on your hands.

Guess it depends on how much income you generate....can't imagine creditors worrying about £20, but if it got to be more, probably worth making sure they're aware in case you suddenly have to hand over a lump sum at review... A firend of mine opened an ebay shop selling ctraft type things that she'd knock up every so often..... started off as a small hobby, now it's a full time job and she employs others to do stuff to..... lot's of potential for the creative.....
