I work in the public sector and it looks like the strike will be going ahead in November (this is not a post about the rights and wrongs of striking). My union fees were allowed as part of our I&E.
My OH works in the private sector and in November he will get his bonus. We have the usual clause about keeping 10% and then a 50/50 split. Will I be able to ask my IP if I can take the equivalent money from OH bonus for the strike days i have lost pay for?
I could always opt out of the union, but if the schools go out each time, I will need childcare and it is sometimes as cheap for me to take a day off unpaid as it is to pay for the childcare. I used all my annual leave in the summer holidays to look after the kids and save on childcare costs.
You will need to speak to your IP about this as I really don't know how you would stand. I know normally you would have to accept the loss of pay as the creditors will say that it is your choice to strike.
It maybe that you can keep some of the money but only your IP can advise on that.

It's not as simple as whether or not you chose to strike, Jan. I am in the same position, if the schools close I have to take a day out to care for the youngster. Luckily I can use leave or flex time, but if you don't have leave left and no flex time system you are forced to take a days unpaid.
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.

I heard unison are issuing letters saying you could be disciplined if you go on strike ,has you arnt fulfilling your contract...so whats the point in asking members to strike and issuing them with a threat!! naughty if you ask me!

Our IVA's over YIPPEE unbelievable!Seems like yesterday it was approved despite everything
I'm afraid I won't be striking - just cannot afford to lose the wages, particularly as hubby's income will be going down in December and we have to try and sort our payments out.

I really feel for all of those involved with these strikes. I know it's not just as simple as saying I can't strike in some establishments though, because if you are seen to cross a picket line things might get awkward or even nasty. I still remember the miners strikes and still have feuding neighbours now even though this was years ago, 1 was a miner and 1 was a policeman who waived wads of cash at the miners fro his horse whilst they had no money! What a lovely person he must have been!!!!

We've had one strike since I worked for the public sector. I, and most of my colleagues, went into work and have to say we had no problems at all crossing the picket line and I fully expect the same to happen again this time.

Dont think i could strike on principal of it affecting care of patients
It wont affect the care of patients as such, because managers will be asked for minimum staffing levels and unions may directly ask striking staff members to work through the strike to ensure patient care is not dragged into the debate(along with union members who voted not to strike and non union members of staff).
