Good morning

Sorry if I am posting this in the wrong place, not sure how to categorize my question...

Right, supermarket food shopping. I have an ongoing disagrement with hubby. I think Morrisons are much cheaper than Tescos. Am I wrong? Is there a way to compare them both?

Its just that I am the one that does most of the food shopping and I am sure that Morrisons are cheaper on my shopping buy about £20!!

I have also heard of a supermarket called Lydil?? (not sure how to spell it, sorry). Has anyone ever shopped here? Any good?

Me being money smart... See?

Oh and I went into Dorothy Perkins... wanted a pair of flat shoes. Saw a pair on sale, from £29 to £15 (i think £29 was way over too much for a pair of flat shoes!!!)... So £15 on sale and guess what. I didnt buy them!!! heheheh

Went back yesterday again, and YES!! They had been reduced again to £5!! Result or what??

Did I do well?

Hugs

x

Hi Mia,

The supermarket you refer to is Lidl and some posters think that they are good. I personally don't like them or Aldi.

What I used to do was a 'virtual shop' by comparing prices online and if anything was cheaper I'd go to that supermarket.

Having said that, I do use Asda for my normal shop as daughter works there so I get discount. Use Tesco for a top up during the week. I'm not fussed on Morrisons at all - it is each to his own though.

Well done with the shoes!!!! We just had to get some for my daughter when she got married and they were £24 in BHS - got them to the checkout and they were down to £6!! Bargain!!

I think there is little in it prices wise between tesco, asda and morrisons. Sainsbury is a little dearer. It all depends on who has offers on for the things you want to buy!!

Lidls can have bargains sometimes recently selling 2l bottles of pepsi for 89p!! And their fruit and veg is as good as any of the big shops!!

Tesco have an online pricechecker but it may take a long time to run through a whole weeks worth of groceries to check all the prices.

Its a bit of a battle every week to try and stick within budget but it gets easier with practice.

I pretty much know the price of things in Asda now and certain things I will check in Tesco. For example - dogs have generio dentastix which have now gone up to £1 in Asda and are 93p in Tesco. Having said that, I suppose with the discount we get then Asda is cheaper for us but worth knowing for others.

Meat we get from the local butcher and bread from a local bakery.

Fruit and veg is either from supermarkets (not Lidl or Aldi though as I really dislike them), local farm shop or Costco (buy onions and potatoes in bulk from there as we get through shed loads!!!)

I do most of my supermarket shopping in Sainsburys as it's closest for me, but I get fish from a local wholesaler, meat from the butchers or the market and vegetables from the greengrocer and I find this works out cheaper tahn buying everything from the supermarket.

Thank you guys. I will try to find a Lidl close to me.

Maybe I spend more in Tescos because there is more choice...

Well done on the shoes as well Jan! I love it when that happens. I remember once I bought a coat. Price £60. Very good quality (12 years ago and still have!). When I got to the check out... £20!!

Shame we cant find bargains when it comes to the price of Diesel... If I could I would ride my bike to work.

I forgot to say, for the dogs, chews and dentastiks, I always got to Wilkinsons. They have a big bag of chews (flat ones about 6 inches) for £1. and a big bag of dog biscuits is £2.

I also get cleaning stuff from there sometimes on special offer. I always keep an eye out for washing up powder and dishwasher detergent on special offer. I refuse to pay the full price! Oh sorry I am going on a bit, but I found out that you can buy diswasher tablets lets say, 28 for £6 or £8, which sounds OK, but next to them in morrisons was a BOTTLE container with dishwasher powder, same number of washes and just £3.99!!! Just because its not in tablet form!

OK, Oops me just ranting now. Coffee time.

We share the shopping equally but I do all the finances.

We share the shopping but I pay for it as part of my contribution towards the household expenditure.

I'm terrible in the supermarkets - I hate slow shoppers, screaming children, queues - basically anything to do with supermarkets! I'm sure my blood pressure is through the roof when I go!

Now I am retired I do tend to play the save as much as possible game. When one of us gets paid, I do an online Asda shop stocking up on food / household goods that are cheaper than Tesco - by stocking up it saves me enough to pay for the £3 delivery charge - cheaper than driving the 24 mile round journey.

Do my main shop at Tescos but have started to jot down prices as I go round and have spotted 2 overcharged items in the last few weeks. Then I get double this amount back in cash.

Lidls - I tend to get cooking stuff there and my staple drink Pepsi Max! They are cheaper but I don't like their ready made meals or some of their tinned range.

Pet foods - I have to go to the farm store but if I had cats and dogs I would be scouring on-line for bargains.

I'm afraid both of us lose our tempers when shopping!!! I use Tesco for a top up shop, Sainsburys occasionally and Asda for the majority, plus the local butcher and baker. As all are within easy reach it works out cheaper than having delivery.
