Not until something like this happens do you realise just how important family is - we told parents and siblings - anyone else does not need know - amazing what relief it is when the closest people know and the strength and support they give - even though they could kill you.

Interesting about who you tell......we haven't told anyone at all; and as there are no visible signs (no house move or change of car etc) I'm not sure anyone will know unless they found us on the insolvency register.
In fact, we probably appear to have more money than previously, as we constantly used one line of credit to pay off another. Now, with careful budgeting, and realistic monthly amounts allocated for all of our expenditures, we seem to be managing ok. (In fact we saved £20 of our housekeeping this month and had a takeaway for the first time in ages, and I can assure you it tasted all the better for knowing it was with our own money!)
The forum is a great way of "off-loading" as well as finding out things specifically related to your IVA.

I have to agree with johnpaul. Without the time and dedication put in by Andy, Melanie and all the other experts, there would be far more confused and scared people out there. Their advice and support has gone a long way in helping everybody on this forum.
Words just dont say enough!!

Hi Blueshoes
You are so right when you say that a takeaway tastes so much better when you have worked so hard to save the money for it.
Little treats like that now and again will help you get through the five years

I agree, tis site and the help gleaned from it and its experts in priceless. During these times, you feel desperate, ashamed and in dire need of impartial, non judgemental advice. I have used a few other forums around, but this one is the best by far.

Its a shame the sister site regarding bankruptcy isntrun like this, thats why I keep asking BR questions, sorry......

Maybe you could have a BR section here Andy?

Feel free to keep asking those bankruptcy questions here - it doesn't really matter what the subject matter is as there are lots of people with knowledge or experiences to share.

I used to log onto the Bankruptcy forum regularly but as no-one else was on there I was worried about answering the questions in case I gave the wrong advice - I like knowing Melanie and the others are there if I get it wrong!

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present - a gift to make the most of.

Well done Lizzie for having the courage to tell your family - not an easy thing to do. When it was first suggested that I go BR, I was horrified, the mere thought of it just terrified me, mainly because I knew nothing about it. But thanks to this site, the experts who give their precious time to advise, and people like Skippy, Scaredkez & Aguise (and everyone else for that matter) who share their experiences and knowledge on here, the process for me was made easier and far less daunting. I still have my bad days where I feel like such a loser for getting myself into this mess, but then I have good days when I feel that at least I'm trying to get myself out of it (and the good days are starting to outway the bad at last!). It's been such a huge learning curve for me personally and i couldn't have done it without the people who post on here - so big up to you all!!! I have only told 1 close friend about my BR and was worried about my name and address being printed in the paper - but no-ones said anything, theres no cross painted on the outside of my house, and no-one has expected me to carry a bell shouting "unclean"!!!!! (though at times have felt it!!!) And as for living on a budget - I love it!!!! It's made me realise just how much useless stuff I used to buy - and I'm doing my bit for the environment by not buying so much and needing so many plastic bags to carry my shopping home in!!!! Now I find myself questioning whether I really need something or not - and if not I keep the cash in me purse!!! And at the end of the week, if there's still pennies in me purse i treat myself. That giant bar of cadburys caramel never tasted so sweet cos I knew that it had been bought with MY hard earned and hard saved pennies!!!! I would love to share it with you all, but in a moment of weakness - I ate the lot!!!!!!!!!! Have to wait till end of next week!!!

We told only a couple of people to start with, my parents, my sister and one of my brothers. My sister posts on here and my brother has just gone into a Debt Repayment Plan. If we hadn't mentioned our situation to any of them (apart from Mum and Dad) we wouldn't have discovered that they too were in a finacial mess. I introduced my sister to this site and now she is receiving help and advise from all of you. Families can be quite understanding and forgiving aswell as true friends. I no longer feel ashamed by our debt, more happy that we took control and sorted it out. When I wake up in the morning I no longer dred phone calls, letters etc. Lets face it its more shaming being in debt and trying to HIDE that fact than trying to HIDE the fact you are doing something about it.
Best of luck in what ever you decide.

It took me ages to screw up the courage to tell my mum I was going BR, but when I did she told me not to worry, that everyone was doing it these days! That wasn't the reaction I was expecting!
