I am so pleased for you and I bet it is a huge relief for you. I wish you both the very best with everything.

Our loved ones wouldnt want us to suffer alone and honesty is the best policy. Your partner sounds lovely.

You obviously have so much that money cannot buy.

Good luck.

your post really struck a chord with me.

Like yourself I earn around £2100 a month. A decent salery. My wife earns around £1500. Our total debts were £65,000, all mostly credit cards. It seemned an almost impossible level of debt, and would get to the end of each month with nothing.

Our first step was to admit we had a problem, something my wife found difficult.

After about a year of wondering were to go next, we sold our house, and I recently sold my car. We now both live only 10-15 mins from work and often cycle, so were getting fit too.

We eventually approached Payplan and took out individual IVA's and are now both much better of financialy, so actually have a reasonable disposable income! I pay £530, my wife £320. We know the dept will be paid of in the next five years, we have new accounts no one can chase us for money, and there's no more relying on credit.

MNBA one of my creditors tried very hard to persuade me from an IVA. You should make up your own mind about this situation. I'm confidant I've made the right decision.

What a super wife you have - loving and non-judgemental. And how positive you now seem to be once again in control of your finances.

It is good to see that some peoople are prepared to make lifestyle changes to bring their budget into line without jumping straight into an IVA.

Hi
A great story and just shows that in the vast majority of cases a partner will be supportive.

Just a quick update for anybody who's interested, my wife and I sat down together to consider our options and indeed our goals and ambitions. We agreed the most important thing was to secure the future for our son (5 months old now!) and debts hanging over us is not benficial to that goal. Having identified that our preference would be for my wife not to have to work (so she can look after the boy) we have decided to sell up and move away. The house has been valued by 3 different Estate agents and all came up with similar proces which if achieved are more than enough to clear all outstanding debt. We can then move up north(ish), buy a similarly sized house for a lot less and live a debt free life on my salary alone. The commute to London will be ok so no need to change jobs and all our problems are solved. The only snag of course is being able to sell the house... fingers crossed!

I am glad to hear that you have taken your situation squarely by the horns.

Please make sure that you factor in the increased cost of the commute to London in your bugets when you move so that this does not drag you into debt once again
