The best thing would be a hotel I think Skip,w where you can book a private function room. That lodge we stayed in was great and it wasnt in a city centre. I was expensive though, we were desperate at the time, I had booked a cheap hotel but I wouldnt stay there, it was dirty, so we just had to find something quick. A lot of out of centre lodges do have pubs near but I dont think they do private function rooms, plus there would have to be enough to make it viable. I used to enjoy the early FF meetings at the pub, we didnt really talk that much debt though, it was more about meeting each other and spending some time with people in the same boat. It was a huge relief to me to make and stay friends with someone having gone through all the emotions. To know I wasnt a 'freak' or 'scum' for getting myself knee deep in stuff.

I understand the meetings have moved on from then and are now more structured, perhaps now a private meeting place is more suitable. Back then they were not so focussed on debt issues.

Again, I'm with you Skippy.

I think that a city centre pub will be too noisy on a Saturday night and I wouldn't want to be walking back across town either to get to the hotel.

Needs a bit more investigtion I think.

Again back at the begining we just arranged them in hotel type pubs. The drinks were paid for by Iva.co.uk and were more about meeting each other off board.

I must admit I've never been to a meeting in a pub Lily, but I think my main worry is walking back across the town to he hotel as Jan says. I know at one of the meetings people were uncomfortable walking back to their cars in the town.

The last meeting I went to in Slough was the best of both worlds - it was in a room off the bar!

Size5, it's over to you!

No, the ones I attended were in hotels that were also used as pubs by the locals. If youre not staying over you need car parking facilities so you can get back safetly to your car. In Birmingham there is no inner city parking and its a scary place at night on your own.

Good luck with finding a suitable venue and have a great time.

I think hotel style pubs are ok as long as they are slightly out of town and not likely to be too crowded.

Not much point in having a meeting of like minded souls if you end up not sitting together and not being able to hold a decent conversation.

Hence the suggestion of the 'out of town'Travel lodge with a pub next door. I did supply the details you asked for. We didnt have the problem of 'outsiders' butting in any, when I attended. I dont think youre going to satisfy everyones wish list, if the wish list is too long, its never going to get off the ground.

I cannot attend anyway, I was just trying to help.

As it turns out the place that Lily has suggested is about 15 minutes away from us and there is definitely plenty there - i.e accomodation, eating places and a pub (although i've never actually been in the pub!). However anywhere in the Manchester area is good for me/us [:)] xx
please visit my blog http://tori.blogs.iva.co.uk/ a second chance..

We will travel back same night, so the south side of Manchester would be easier to get back from. It's about a 2 hour drive from us.
IVA.co.uk The best place for debt advice. Thanks to Melanie Giles, David Mond, David and J (Elv5) Kallis, Dand, Skippy, Andy Davie

Thanks for the suggestion Lily - as I said it looks a good choice, and it's also good to go somewhere on recommendation rather than taking a chance.

It's a shame you won't be able to make it Lily, it'd be good to meet you, but I can understand you're a bit busy at the moment with all that's going on!

As I said it's over to Size5 now as I'm nowhere near Manchester and we could end up anywhere if it's left to me!

All suggestions welcomed Lily!

Sorry you won't be able to make it - it would have been lovely to see you again.

I've never had a problem walking through Manchester City I must admit and I'm from a small market town so the city scared me a lot when I first visited..now it feels like my 2nd home. Is the meeting social then or going to be debt related as in talks about debt etc.,? I was under the understanding it was social but I've probably got it wrong. I know my hubby won't come if we're listening and talking all about debt, he's in it he knows and hears me often enough that we have an unwritten rule that says 'Melanie' and it's enough to know we've no money and a code word if in the presence of others to each other to remind us if they're asking us to join in activities we can't afford.

It is very much a social evening, but you will find that people will talk about their problems as some of can't discuss it outside the house as no one knows.

It's mostly about getting to know people you have 'spoken' to on here.

There will no one talking to us about debt, but there will be professionals on hand if you have anythng you want to discuss with them.

That is how I had thought it would be Jan, for some reason in the middle of the night suffering from insomnia you don't always see things clearly written on the net lol.

The ones I've been to have been mainly social with the experts on hand to give advice if anyone needs help. I had to ask Melanie for advice and I wouldn't have been comfortable trying to make myself heard if the room was noisy!
