I prefer central heating for personal use but love going to friends who have open fires, nothing like it x

It would have been too hot - it was only September! That was why I couldn't understand why other people were using them!

Anyway, I would have had to pay for the wood and I'm way too tight for that!

we use the free papers and my mum saves up her daily papers and sends me a bag full when she sees me. Very cost effective! We do find and use wood too, Mr R often brings some home from work.
We do have central heating, the fire is just a nice added bonus to keep us extra snug. We have just bought some chest nuts and marshmallows for some festive fireside toasting!
Keep meaning to try jacket spuds in fire..how is the best way to do them? I bet they are extra tasty!

My mum used to wrap them in foil, and then put them in the ash can at the bottom of the fire. I can't remember how long it took to cook them but they were lovely.

Don't do marshmallows any more though.

Pity you don't live near me I'd save you a few LadyH, I don't actually buy a newspaper daily or local, my next door neighbour puts one through our door, we read it and then I take it to work and pop it in the coffee area, when it's finished in there it goes in the recycling!

Just come across this, I think I may invest as although I no longer have a coal fire, I do have a chimenea (?) in the back garden, and I like nothing better, even at this time of year, than to sit outside at night with the garden light on and read my paper/chew the fat etc in front of a nice fire.

The price of coal and logs/kindling however is scandalous for the small amounts we need so that looks like a good tip to me.

Regards.

The people who lived here before us left a chimnea behind. As we live in a downstairs maisonette I don't feel comfortable lighting it as it's not fair on the girl upstairs (I would be furious if it was the other way round and she did it!) so I'm planning on planting it out next year!

Size5 - I couldn't be outside at this time of year, fire or no fire!

Oh I could, I love being outside, can't stand to be too warm and stuffed up inside, love to go out and blow away the cobwebs. At work we have a war with the heater, I'm turning it off they're turning it on! I win!

I love being outside, in nature, in all seasons. They all have unique aspects that make them beautiful in their own way.

I absolutely hate the winter and I'd happily hibernate until the summer - if I didn't have to work I'd love to go somewhere warm every winter!

It looks lovely when the sun is out and everything is crisp but I don't see the attraction of going out in it!

You wouldn't win in our office Lesley! There are too many of us who like being warm!

I hate the cold, always have done but seem to do so more at the moment since my bones don't have quite so much flesh on!

When it's really cold, other than walking the dogs and work, I don't leave the house. It was awful this morning having to scrape the windscreen - I was freezing!

I would quite happily move somewhere warm to live tomorrow if I could afford it. I would also go away somewhere nice for Christmas as well if it wasn't for my parents and the all important thing of not having enough money to do it!

My grandtwins are always protected and indoors, I told their Mum to get them out in the fresh air, wrapped up. She did today and said they now have lovely rosy cheeks and sleeping like a log! Fresh air did them good, I'm sure. x
