I had one blip a few months back and my card balance went into just over a £1000 ... i panicked, made myself ill over it and withdrew it from our savings to pay it off ... I can't believed i juggled £70k plus of debt for years without a care !!!

to post that took a lot and I hesitated for a while but the wonder of this forum has made me realise I'm not alone. If ever I get too bad I do come and post on the forum and it does put me back on track.

I know exactly how you feel Lesley as I admit I get a buzz out of spending sometimes. The IVA however has morphed me into a strange hybrid. One that still has the predisposition to spend but now merged with someone who feels guilt if I do!

I think it is wise for me to remind myself of the pre IVA mess as often as possible. Although how we got in such a mess now almost seems like another life and I cannot exactly fathom what happened.

That's why whilst I want a Vanquis card, I am also terrified of it at the same time. It's a quandry.

One of the reasons behind getting mine was that little Foggy wants a laptop and, although I have saved the cash to go and buy one ( flash git ... only a low cost one) .. I wanted the extra protection offered by paying for it by credit card. The cash will go right back to the CC company, so no interest levied.

My statement date will, they tell me, be 1st monthly, so, heeding earlier advice, I shall wait a week or so before getting it.

Spending on plastic makes you smile....happy.One month of free interest.etc
Did anyone see anyone in Black Friday today looking depress in buying..buying....just too eager.Bet it went on plastic.Happy people.

Just don't spend more than your paygrade...

Don't let the iva experience cast a shadow on your free spirit...turning you into a debt deliverance monk.Like alcohol drink responsibly.

Managable Debt is a norm now..ask the government with its public debts,it can never operate without borrowing?

But life continues:|

Going shopping doesn't bother me, I actually dislike shopping in itself. Online is my downfall booking hotels maybe only Premier Inn but it all costs and going to the theatre is a passion of mine!

Til, it's definitely the buzz I'm actually selling on EBay at the minute and the money I make (items finish tomorrow) I will leave in Paypal and treat myself to something.

My daughter is a full time student and she has a credit card which helps before pay day for petrol etc which I pay for. The card is entirely in her name and in no way linked to me. However, as I always pay with on line banking this payment would show up on my banks statements.
Surely this would not be a problem or is it better to transfer the money into her account and get her to pay it?

It shouldn't be a problem as it can be clearly demonstrated that it is her CC.

Strangely we have been having a similar thought pattern to you guys. We are getting the Vanquis card letters and have considered applying for one merely to help us rebuild our credit whilst we are in IVA purgatory (still 3.5 years until it comes off our files)

We have saving albeit only a couple of hundred pounds which we have accumulated over the last few months for that 'just in case day'

I think I may apply and see where we go from there :-) Eeek!

As I said earlier, one of the reasons I got one was to take advantage of the extra consumer credit protection for faulty goods. I was going to get a modest lap top for little Foggy and pay the cash I had saved back in right away.

In the end I couldn't bring myself to do it and paid cash for it! I did, however, make a small purchase, which I have repaid, as it is important to be seen to be using credit sensibly.

We use a separate bank account for online shopping which we transfer the exact money over to cover the purchase in case of fraud etc... This would reduce the risk that we run each time we make a purchase.

I do feel we may feel like we shouldn't as we discuss each and every purchase we consider making several times. Its been a valuable lesson learned and one for which I do not wish to fall foul of ever again. I guess its just a nice thought to know we have some kind of back up should we require it.

I will have 'do we need it? Can we afford it?' etched on my head stone :-o

An update, both myself & hubby have been accepted!!

Great to have that back up in case but I'm equally as weary of using it?! The feeling of euphoria when they said 'I'm pleased to inform you your application has been accepted' Silly as it sounds I feel like a mortal human again.

My apr is significantly high though at 47.9% on purchases & an eye watering 58.9% on balance transfers.

Hubby's came in at 37.9% so I guess this is because I am a homemaker... The Direct debit has been set up for the payment to come out as a deterrent.

We have no intentions of using it for 'living beyond or helping others' as were our previous mistakes.

Simply to help improve our credit rating whilst we are in waiting. Minimal usage for shopping or fuel which will be paid straight off.

Slightly concerning how easy it was and that they also like Foggy took my child tax credit, working tax credit & Child Benefit into consideration?!

The only final gift I would like this year is to see our names disappear off that damned insolvency register.
