Hi All

My dog was under the weather last weekend so i took her to the vets on Monday this week. The top and bottom of it is that it has cost us £330 already this week for the vet bills and am expecting some more as she has to go for another blood test on Monday. I have the receipts as proof so am i able to ask our IP for a lower payment this month as we've had this unexpected money to pay out? (which my parents lent to us) our little car also died yesterday in the middle of the road and that cost £90 to mend..... (again have proof), or do we just have to find the money for things like this?
I have just started a new job this week and so we are struggling to get straight at the mo but when I get paid (at the month end), we should be able to start putting a small amount away, it just hasnt happened yet and as my parents lent me the money to pay the vet bill, i want to pay them back asap as they are pensioners.

Hi,

You need to speak to your IP about this. It maybe that you can take a payment break to get yourselves sorted.

Do you have insurance for your dog? It's something I would consider if not.

Hope the dog is ok.

Hi kallis3

Thanks, I ring them on Monday to see. No she not insured anymore, she was when she was a daft pup but never needed it so we cancelled as it was expensive(shes 8 now)so what we have saved in premiums it may cost us now, what goes around comes around i suppose, As long as she gets better thats more important to us (fingers crossed).

Thankyou.

I hope she does get better, it's very worrying when your pets are ill.

We have three lots of insurance for our dogs as I know how expensive these things can be - with one of our other dogs a simple cut on the tail ended up costing £300 and with our Great Dane it was over a grand plus his purchase fee as he had to be put to sleep and I was so glad we had the insurance!

I sincerely hope your dog is better soon. There is always a debate about pet insurance and it's down to the individual to either purchase or not to. I personally don't have it and premiums saved in their ages (had I put the money away) would cover the vets bills hopefully should anything happy.

Talk to your IP, there will be a way forward. x

Personally speaking, I wouldn't be without it. I might have every intention of putting the money aside, but in reality I know I'd be dipping into it!

Oh I've never put the money away but it's like white goods insurance sometimes it pays sometimes it doesn't.

I would rather have the peace of mind the insurance brings. Mine will pay the vet direct so other than the excess I don't have to worry about paying out and then claiming back.

Luckily I've not had either of my dogs to the vets in years but I'm sure my time will come and when it does I'll sort it somehow but when you're living in an IVA on a reduced income too after having two years of playing initial catchup, any kind of insurance is way down on the list of priorities.

If my IVA hadn't be so trying then maybe but there is no way.

Fortunately ours have only been for routine jabs but I would skimp on other things to pay it.

We're fortunate in that it has always been allowed for. The insurance for Topsy is funded from savings elsewhere.

I work in insurance and so was really split about taking it out. Our last dog had an autoimmune condition and with no insurance the medication alone was £1000 per year for eight long years. When we got Jack I took it out and he got a bad infection shortly afterwards and I have had seven times back what i've paid in. It's all swings and roundabouts!

I've had Harry insured since we got him (or should that be he got us?!?) and I'm glad I have. It's good to know that if he's ill (long term) or injured I won't have to worry. I'd find the money somehow, but it's one less thing to worry about.
