My Dad used to make the most hideous home brew in our airing cupboard. I would lie awake at night listening to it bubbling away, and the smell when he used to stir it was horrendous!

Sorry to share that, but your reference to home brew made me very nostalgic. You don't see many people brewing these days!

it tastes absolutely superb. I have done loads of fruit wine last year and never paid for any of the fruit. We had access to an apple tree and picked loads of elderberries from hedgerows

Home Brew ?
Its the only thing that kept me sane during our IVA !
and still I have 16 pints bubbling away at a time.
At the moment its 16 pints of mild at 5% !

More seriously on the subject of telling people, we
only told immediate family and then later a couple of good friends/ colleagues. We found it very cathartic, if only because people realised we were making a serious attempt at repaying our debts, and in some respects we were showing them that we had owned up to our problems, and they certainly gave us a lot of 'credit' for that.
Good Luck !
! I hate credit cards !

How much would a pint of home brew cost approximately to make these days? I'll have to get my hubby onto it. He made marrow rum on year and it was absolutely lethal.

I started making Home Brew again some months back to try and cut the household costs down... Need to ensure the essentials are covered [:D]

I brew using all grain (malt barley, hops etc) so the costs are low and works about 40p per pint for a good quality Munich style beer [:p]

Hopefully when we hear when a Frugal Friends meeting is to be held some of you could bring a sample of your home brews - I for one will look forward to this.[^][^][:D]

Hi Ginskipper, do you find brewing using the hops e.t.c, it tastes a lot better than the kits. I much preferred using the hops but unfortunatley when I moved the brew boiler fell off the pick up and was run over and at £60 a go think it might be sometime before its replaced

Hi Ivas4us,

I agree and brewing with grain and hops is like night and day when compared with kits. It's relatively cheap entertainment and the smells are truely wonderful... [:p]

My kit has been bodged together and the boiler made from a second hand 50 gallon drum with two cheap kettle elements installed - cost about £15 in total and after the original Kashmiri Chutney smell dissapeared (from drum's previous life), the beer just keeps geeting better [:D]

Happy to share a keg around if I ever get to a Frugal Freinds meeting.

Cheers

Andy
